17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:

19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.

22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

Yesterday, we got into a lively conversation about Lot, and whether or not he was "righteous". If all we had was the account in Genesis, most of us would say, "Ugh! He wasn't righteous at all! He only cared about himself. This was evidenced way back when Lot was given a choice of land to settle. He chose what looked to him as the bigger, better, portion, leaving his Generous Uncle Abe to wander in the desert. When Lot was kidnapped with his family, Courageous Uncle Abe came to the rescue. Instead of joining forces and becoming reconciled with Abram, or even finding somewhere else to live, Lot went right back to Sodom.

But then, we see Uncle Abe praying to God: "Will You destroy the Righteous with the Wicked?" Evidently, Abraham deemed his no-good nephew to be among the "Righteous".

Centuries later, St. Peter would characterize Lot as "Righteous", and suggests that Lot loathed the evil that surrounded him. Who am I to argue with St. Peter?

I admit that Lot exhibited the righteous virtue of Hospitality, but so did Leona Helmsley, (AKA "The Queen of Mean"). She was in the business of Hospitality, but she wasn't what I'd call "Righteous".

I seem to recall the Taliban refusing to hand over Bin Laden after 9/11, citing their laws of "Hospitality".

There had to have been something else that caused Abraham and Peter to see "righteousness" in Lot. This could have been that, even surrounded by evil, Lot maintained his Faith in the One True God?

Since all human "righteousness is like "Filthy Rags", (Isaiah 64:6), that's probably the reason!
