9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.

14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

As I sweat on the Stationary Bike, trying to get a half hour of Cardio in three times a week, I sometimes muse about being a Bicycle Messenger in the City of Boston, fifty years ago. This was in the days before Fax Machines, and Businesses relied on us to deliver sensitive documents within a short amount of time. The City was Festive and Clean, as it was America's Bicentennial Year (1976). There were Flags and Bunting Everywhere, and the Crosswalks were painted Red, White, and Blue.

Our pay was determined by how many packages we delivered, so I figured out a lot of "shortcuts" through the city. These winding alleys between Chinatown and the Backside of the Theater District were filthy, smelly places, with overflowing dumpsters and (probably) RATS (YIKES!), but Time was of the Essence. In those days, the Theater District was nicknamed "The COMBAT ZONE" because of the amount of crime that took place there. The Warehouse District, Waterfront, and the South End (all of which have now been elegantly gentrified), were pretty bad too. The alleys in these areas were REALLY nasty.

A lot of times when I was cutting through an alley, I would see white outlines of human beings painted on the pavement. These were places where people had died, either alone from an OD, or as the victim of a crime. At first, I had no idea what these outlines signified, then it Dawned on me. I shuddered, and pedaled harder to get out of there.

The Things We Do When We're Young!

Sodom and Gomorrah were whole Cities that had become a Combat Zone. Anyone who stayed out at night was certain to be robbed, raped, or killed (or maybe all three). There seemed to be no restraint on the people's Lawlessness. Lot knew this, but continued to live there with his family.

Contrary to the Sunday School Story, Lot wasn't very Righteous. He chose Sodam and Gomorrah in the deal with Abram. He was well off, and could have moved out when things got ugly, but he seemed to get settled in there. He may have taken a wife from the City, was raising two daughters there, and seemed to approve their suitors from that environment.

Yet, when his future sons-in-law mocked him, and when a rape gang showed up at his doorstep, he offered his daughters to them. HORRIBLE! Why on earth would God want to save this guy?

When Abraham pleaded with God to spare Sodom and Gomorrah, he tried to number the Righteous in those cites. The TRUTH was, there weren't any. Not even Lot was Righteous. God saved him solely as a kindness to Lot's Uncle Abraham, because Abraham prayed that he be spared.

This is a graphic picture of Salvation by the sheer Grace and Kindness of God.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

Peter makes these interesting comments:

6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;
7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless
8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)—

I thought about Peter when I wrote what I did about Lot.

It’s a puzzle!

In terms of “Hospitality”, Lot was indeed “Righteous”. He had taken the Angelic messengers into his home, and, by the Rules of Hospitality, would even sacrifice his own daughters to protect them.

However, the Angel had to grab his hand and YANK Lot out of Sodom.

One can only think that Peter was seeing Lot’s “Righteousness” as his being chosen of God to be rescued.

There is no one Righteous, unless they are robed in the Righteousness of Christ.

Perhaps, Lot believed in the God of Abraham. That would have been IMPUTED Righteousness, just like his Uncle Abraham.

Many times Believers are surrounded by evil, but don’t participate. They hate the evil around them, but do nothing to correct it. Maybe it’s Fear, maybe it’s Complacency, or Maybe it’s just a feeling of Hopelessness.

They’re still considered “Righteous”, but only because they belong to God.

BUT...it IS a puzzle!

So, after revisiting Lot’s Behavior, by reading the original story, what do you think about Peter’s statement?

I just remember seeing those white outlines on the pavement in those stinking back alleys, and my FIRST instinct was to get out of there.

I didn’t have much choice, as I needed to get as many deliveries in as possible.

I didn’t know Jesus then, so I wasn’t “Righteous”, but I knew evil when I saw it.

Based on the Genesis account, who would have guessed Lot was righteous.

Peter must have had some revelation from heaven about that. Just as Paul named Janus and Jambes as the magicians in the court of Egypt who opposed Moses—and Exodus does not give their names.
