Genesis 9:18-29

18 And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan. 19 These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.

20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.

Heavenly Father,

My High Tower

My Stronghold and My Fortress,

It is with a little sigh of relief that we move on from this story, but it does speak an essential Truth about humankind. These four men had just witnessed a Global Miracle, had the lives of their families, the animals, and themselves saved by Almighty God, had enjoined in a Sacred Covenant that was sealed in Blood and Certified by a Glorious Rainbow, and given the Honor and Privilege of Starting Over. And what did they do? In the same generation, they all started acting up all over again. I'm reminded of a story I shared a few years ago while discussing The Sermon on the Mount:

Before Facebook came onto the scene, there was a platform called "My Space". In my humble opinion, My Space was a much better platform than FB, as it gave to user the opportunity to design her own webpage, using hundreds of available templates, fonts, and images. I had three My Space Webpages, two for music and one for art. I don't understand why the platform collapsed in favor of FB, which is rigid, censorial, and offers no room for creativity...OK, I think I just answered my own question. Maybe most people actually like being "herded" into conformity.

But...back to my story. My pages had an international following, and I was befriended by a young woman who had been raised as an atheist in Communist China. She now felt the need for religion in her life and asked me about Christianity. I explained it as best as I could, mailed her a New Testament, and asked her to keep me informed as she read it. She started in Matthew, which is where most people would start a book, at the first page.

She got through the "begats" just fine, and the Christmas Story rang a bell of familiarity, but she hit the wall at The Sermon on the Mount. She wrote:

"I don't get this guy Matthew at all. He is SO harsh! Just LOOKING at a woman is the same as adultery? Just THINKING about murder is the same as killing someone? Even Confucius wasn't THAT STRICT!"

I was stymied. Having been raised in the West, in a Judeo-Christian environment, I always looked at The Sermon on the Mount as an amazing source of comfort and peace. Her reaction was totally foreign to me. I breathed a prayer to the Holy Spirit to give me wisdom. The words came to me.

I agreed with her completely that the standards set forth in the Sermon were totally impossible for any human being to keep. If anyone even was able to maintain even a scintilla of righteousness demanded by the perfection of the Sermon, then that righteousness would instantly be negated by the sin of PRIDE. Self-Righteousness is perhaps the biggest sin of them all. In fact, it is the only sin that really got a tongue-lashing by Jesus when He walked the earth. While Jesus showed mercy and kindness to tax-collectors and prostitutes, outcasts and lepers, and even Gentiles and Samaritans, He was tough on Scribes, Pharisees, Teachers of the Law, and the Ultra-Religious. What kind of a "Religious Leader" acts like that? While He admonished sinners to "Sin No More", it was after He had shown them mercy. That was the exact opposite of the religious systems of the world, in which one gets righteous in order to be saved. He saved sinners and then they were righteous because they were saved.

I don't know if she got it, as the My Space platform was on its last legs at the time and we lost touch. It did give me a new perspective on The Sermon on The Mount though. These were not just familiar, nice-sounding words. I believe God was showing me that there was no way anybody can be righteous enough to fulfill God's Perfect Law.

And That's Why We Need a Savior.

The Plan for Salvation began before the Foundation of the World. Noah's Ark may have saved people from the Flood, but it didn't save them from Sin. Right off the Boat, they started up again. That's in everybody's "Personality".

Today's "Personality" is Shem. While Shem is still a sinner like everybody else, he took the initiative to cover Noah's Humiliation. He also had a strong influence on his younger brother Japheth, who joined him in this Good Deed. Shem was to become the Progenitor of the People in the Middle East, mostly in Arabia and the Levant. Both Arabs and Jews consider Shem to be their distant ancestor, and, to this day, are called Semites. Arabic and Hebrew are called "Semitic Languages".

It would be nice if they all could act like brothers instead of enemies, but, as we see from the sordid tale of Noah and his sons:

"All Have Sinned And Fall Short Of The Glory Of God."

Amen to your prayer. I love the 3 different representations of the 3 sons, quite a contrast. Yes, even explaining scripture to children must be simplified. I remember not being able to recite Psalms 23 vs 1 because it said. The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. Kids made fun of me cause I couldn’t do it because I didn’t explain why.
