Genesis 9:18-29

20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

In Dedham MA, stands a house that has been there for nearly 400 years. The year 1636 is emblazoned on the Chimney, but different sources disagree on the actual age of the house. Even with the disagreement, the house is considered the oldest frame-built house in the United States. Bear in mind, the house was built less than twenty years after the Pilgrims landed in 1620, and the distance between Plymouth and Dedham is forty miles on the Interstate. Only, the was no Interstate in 1636, so it may have been a lot more back then. This was one of the things that bothered me growing up, as I calculated how many babies the Pilgrims had to have (allowing for an appalling figure for infant mortality), how many new Colonists arrived from England, how many died on the ship coming across the Atlantic, and how much virgin forest was cleared for farmland. (Yeah...I pondered such things. I was a weird kid!).

A sense of satisfaction filled me when I realized that the Fairbanks House was a reminder of the resilience of us humans. We can be all but wiped out by Famine, Flood, Fire, or War, and we spring back.

Today's Story is NOT one you learn in Sunday School, and has Four Personalities, so we may be here a while.

Hopefully, we won't be here as long as The Fairbanks House!
