A New Study For A New Year: Personalities

Genesis 3:1-12

3 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

We're going to camp out on these verses for a few days, as there are so many clues to so many personalities encased within them.

The personality that we will examine today is someone we don't like to talk about too much...the Serpent.

The King James calls him "subtle". That's a rather nice sounding word for "crafty", "sly", "sneaky" and a dozen other uncomplimentary words. Unlike these other words, "Subtle" implies profound intelligence that facilitates the serpent's evil schemes.

At the present time, I happen to be re-reading "The Picture of Dorain Gray", by Oscar Wilde. In this Classic Victorian Horror Story, a handsome youth is thoroughly corrupted by the evil character Lord Henry. Henry doesn't come across as evil at first. In fact, he's hilarious with his epigrams, puns, wry comments on British Society, and droll statements. He's the type of guy you would invite to parties just to keep things lively. His constant witticisms soon become tiresome to the reader, who would like to see a genuine emotion come forth, but it's not to be. Lord Henry is Lord Henry, and is the epitome of the new Internet Job Description of "INFLUENCER".

Henry's main tactic is to question and second-guess every word, statement, thought, or emotion from the Protagonist Dorain. Soon, Dorian begins to doubt his own convictions and eventually becomes even more corrupt than Lord Henry. This is because of a supernatural element in the story that prevents Dorian from any consequences for his sins. The more he gets away with things, the more corrupt he becomes.

The Serpent, who is identified in the Book of Revelation centuries later, is none other than Satan. Like Lord Henry, the serpent presents himself as an elegant, pretty snake lounging in the tree. (Florida residents know that the prettiest snakes are the most poisonous!) Popular Culture often depicts Satan as elegantly attired, and, in "The Picture of Dorian Gray", Lord Henry is depicted as an Aristocratic, Aesthetic, Patron of the Arts. His clothing is high-end designer style, and his mansion is filled with Classic Art. It is in this guise that the serpent presents himself to Eve. The first words out of his moth are a distortion of God's very reasonable Command to avoid just ONE Tree.:

"Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?"

Eve counters this with her OWN distortion of God's Command:

But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. (God didn't say anything about "touching" the tree. Eve was adding to God's Commandments)

Next, the Serpent slanders God and accuses Him of lying to Adam and Eve, implying that God doesn't want what's best for them. This is commonly called "gaslighting" which is a form of Emotional Abuse. It causes Eve to doubt God, doubt her memory, and doubt herself.

It was the end of innocence, for Eve, Adam, and the rest of humanity.

"The Picture of Dorian Gray" caused a huge scandal when it first came out, and was used in evidence against the Author in an Indecency Trial. He was convicted and went to prison for two years. Although the descriptions of evil in the book were graphic, it did teach some important lessons about the nature of corruption and the progress of evil. While Dorian "gets away with" a lot, there is a record of his corruption that haunts him and devours him in the end. It's a good illustration of the Serpent's "Personality".
