Luke 1:26-38

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Back in the middle of the Last Century (I know, that's funny right there!) I was a Junior in High School and was asked out on a date with a guy who was a "Beatnik". His Mom (also a Beatnik and a Jazz Musician to boot) had tickets to a Chinese Opera, in Chinatown, in Chinese. Now, none of us were Chinese, nor did we speak the language, but this was a very cool and hip thing to do, so we went, and were the only folks of the "Caucasian Persuasion" in the entire building. Being tragically Hip, we sat and nodded at the spectacle and pretended to enjoy ourselves. On stage, the actors in masks and magnificent costumes warbled away in Mandarin. The action and choreography had someone who looked like a king draw a chalk circle on the floor. A toddler was placed in the middle of the circle. Then, two women, who looked like they were concubines, each grabbed a wrist of the child and tried to pull the child out of the circle. The child started to cry, and one concubine immediately let go, so it looked like the other woman "won". Then, the king took the child away from the victorious woman and awarded him to the the one who had "lost".

Suddenly, I understood what was going on! It was a variation of the story of King Solomon. I shared my insight with the Beatnik and his Mom. It was our first, last, and ONLY date! LOL!

This "take" on the Wisdom of Solomon, from a very different Culture and Time, is a perfect example of some universal HUMAN themes: the Love of a Mother and Child. In "The Chalk Circle" the women were concubines in a royal household. In the Solomon story, they were prostitutes who were bold enough to go to the KING with their quarrel. The ethnic, economic, and social status of the women were irrelevant. They were Mothers.

We even see the bond between Mother and Child in the Animal Kingdom. When I lived in Florida, we were taught NEVER to get between a mother ALLIGATOR and her young. I'm NOT making this up. We also have the legendary "Mama Bear" who will protect her cubs to her death.

One thing we don't see in life forms of any stature is parthenogenesis. That's just a fancy Greek word for reproduction that takes place without a male and female to make it happen. There were many women who had miraculous births in the Bible, from Sarah, to Hannah, to Samson's Mother, who is not named. All of these women had been considered "infertile" due to age or some other reason, and yet were blessed with a son. They also had husbands.

While Zechariah showed doubt when the Angel made his Announcement, Mary just showed wonder and curiosity. While a late child in old age between a loving couple CAN happen, a Virgin Birth is impossible. That's why Zechariah's reaction was a sin, and Mary's wasn't.

Nothing is impossible with God, and, since He created Nature, He can Transcend it.
