I worked in a Bookstore that served a very liberal seminary, back in the 1980s. While I learned a lot about the Bible during those years, I also learned a lot (perhaps too much!) of what scholars and theorists SAY ABOUT the Bible. Today's Verse from Handel's Messiah was a popular one to argue over.

This is another "Christmas Card Verse" that Handel has set to a Glorious Chorus. While the meaning may seem obvious to you and me as to the Identity of this Child, at the time it was written it posed a Mystery. Who was this Child? Scholars try to complicate the issue by saying that Isaiah had a wife and children, and it could have been a child of the Prophetic Couple. (Isaiah's wife was also a Prophet!). Well, people are delighted when they give birth to a healthy baby, but they don't go as far as calling him "Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace", no matter how "Wonderful" he may be. So Isaiah is obviously talking about Someone Else.

If you will pardon me a wee bit of sarcasm, these are the same "scholars" who say there was more than one "Isaiah" and use "BCE" instead of "BC".

Evidently Matthew had no problem identifying who it was Isaiah meant, and Jesus, while quoting Isaiah extensively, never said "the first Isaiah" or "Deutero-Isaiah". He just said "Isaiah". Period.

Now that I got that out of the way, let's look at this Child.

A pious 8th Century BC Prophet of God would never had referred to a human child as "Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace". That means that Isaiah was speaking of a Child Who was Divine. And yet, that Divine Child is being born "unto US". In my own study of this Verse I can see The Holy Trinity manifest Himself:

"Wonderful Counselor" sounds like The Holy Spirit to me.

"Almighty God, The Everlasting Father" is God the Father.

The "Child" and "Prince of Peace" is The Son, Jesus Christ, The Messiah.
