Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
Job 40:15-24

15 “Look at Behemoth,
    which I made along with you
    and which feeds on grass like an ox.

16  What strength it has in its loins,
    what power in the muscles of its belly!

17  Its tail sways like a cedar;
    the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.

18  Its bones are tubes of bronze,
    its limbs like rods of iron.

19  It ranks first among the works of God,
    yet its Maker can approach it with his sword.

20  The hills bring it their produce,
    and all the wild animals play nearby.

21  Under the lotus plants it lies,
    hidden among the reeds in the marsh.

22  The lotuses conceal it in their shadow;
    the poplars by the stream surround it.

23  A raging river does not alarm it;
    it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth.

24  Can anyone capture it by the eyes,
    or trap it and pierce its nose?

Years ago, in the middle of the last Century, Dad took me to a wonderful place in Jamaica Plain (a part of Boston) called "The Children's Museum". The Museum was located in an old 19th Century mansion that faced Jamaica Pond. Unlike the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum encouraged children to touch and interact with the exhibits.

The room that fascinated me the most was the room with plastic models of a baby in the womb for the nine months of pregnancy. I knew somewhat where babies came from, but this exhibit was astonishing to me. I've never forgotten it. Upon leaving the Museum, we went through the Gift Shop and Dad bought me two plastic dinosaurs, a Brontosaurus and a T-Rex. I loved those two toys and kept them for years.

The Museum outgrew the mansion, and is now located in the Warehouse District intown Boston, right next to the Boston Computer Museum and the Boston Tea Party Ship Replica.

I recently helped my sister pick up the granddaughters' toys that were scattered all over the lining room floor after their visit. Among the toys were two little dinosaur models; a Brontosaurus and a T-Rex. Evidently some factory in Hong Kong is still churning them out!

As God chastises Job and his "friends", He describes the Glories of His Creation. He speaks of animals Job has never seen, and maybe no other human either. One of these is Behemoth, who rules the land, rivers, and streams, and the other is Leviathan, who rules the Seas. Some scholars say that Behemoth is a Hippo, and Leviathan is a Whale. Others posit that they were Dinosaurs, probably a Brontosaurus and a Plesiosaur.

Whatever they were, God made them, and they were BIG.

But God is BIGGER.
