Last week, a category 5 Hurricane hit the Island of Jamaica. For some reason, I've always had a love for that island, her music, and her people, and I asked you all to join me in prayer for them. When I visited the island in 1992, the Music Scene there had moved on from "Classic Reggae" to something called "DUB" and "Dancehall", which were more like Rap. However, I found myself singing the "Old School" Reggae songs with the people there, and noticed how, like we love the oldies, they enjoyed singing the early songs of Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, and Bob Marley. That "Old School" Reggae is still very much in vogue, and some friends of mine have hit it big doing that style of music, and are becoming International Rock Stars playing it. Here's something I wrote about Jamaican Music many years ago:

Back in the 1970s, a new wave of music was sweeping the American Music Scene. While most people associated the Music of Jamaica with Harry Belafonte's sanitized Calypso, or Steel Pan Cruise Ship Music, there was something very new, very raw, and very exciting coming from Jamaica. The Late Bob Marley was at the forefront of this new music, and I was eager to get his new live double-album Babylon by Bus.

SIDE ONE, TRACK ONE of this historic album was very weird to my ears. Above the roar of the enthusiastic crowd was Bob Marley, shouting and declaiming prayers and praise to somebody called "JAH". It was not what I had expected, having been raised on Classical, Rock & Roll, and Motown, and I had never heard of this "JAH" that he was worshiping. After a few minutes of this, the music began, and it was very good music indeed. In future playing of the album (and later the cd) I would skip over the "intro" because I didn't like the sound of it.

A few years later, while reading the Bible for the first time, I came across that name "JAH" again. This time I knew it meant The One True God, but it still didn't make the intro to "Babylon by Bus" any more palatable to me. In fact, it now seemed WORSE because in Bob Marley's religion, "Jah" was referring to Ethiopian Emperor Hallie Selassie I, who was then (and still is) deceased. I don't even think the Emperor himself would appreciate being called this.

Another Music Star, Eric Clapton is an amazing guitar player. Back in the 60s, somebody scrawled "Clapton is God" on a wall in London. Eric was mortified when he saw it and publicly begged his fans NEVER to do that again! Even though he had not yet made any profession of faith, Clapton KNEW this was JUST WRONG!

God Alone is God. No Rock Star, Movie Beauty, Billionaire, Politician, or even Emperor comes close. This Name of God, which appears just once in this Psalm, is His and His Alone.

When I lived in Florida, I experienced a Category 3 Hurricane. That was bad enough. I can't imagine a Cat 5. In the Book of Job, God uses His Sovereignty over the Planet to chastise Job and his "friends". The Weather, the Seasons, the Tides, the Rain, the Thunder, and even the Hurricanes belong to Him.

Job, his "friends, and even the youth Elihu, can't do a thing about it, except PRAY. And that's precisely the Turning Point in this Story. Job is so overwhelmed by the Presence of God that he PRAYS for his "friends". That's when we find out that Job is a REAL Friend, without the "scare quotes".

In 1966 the Rutles faced the biggest threat to their careers. Nasty in a widely quoted interview had apparently claimed that the Rutles were bigger than God, and was reported to have gone on to say that God had never had a hit record.

The story spread like wildfire in America. Many fans burnt their albums, many more burnt their fingers attempting to burn their albums. Album sales skyrocketed, People were buying them just to burn them. But in fact it was all a ghastly mistake.

Nasty, talking to a slightly deaf journalist, had claimed only that the Rutles were bigger than Rod. Rod Stewart would not be big for another eight years, and certainly at this stage hadn’t had a hit. At a press conference, Nasty apologised to God, Rod and the Press, and the tour went ahead as planned. It would be the Rutles’ last.
