[Catholic Caucus] Cardinal jailed by communists recites exorcism during Latin Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the holiest Catholic sites, has suffered multiple desecrations in recent years, such as the Vatican-approved ‘LGBT pilgrimage’ last month and the Pachamama idol scandal in 2019.

Albanian Cardinal Ernest Simoni Troshani, an exorcist who was imprisoned for his Catholic faith under his country’s communist regime, recited an exorcism during a Pontifical High Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica this weekend, where an “LGBT pilgrimage” took place last month and where, just a few years ago, the Pachamama idol was placed on the altar.

The 97-year-old Cardinal Simoni, who courageously endured being jailed for 18 years by the Albanian communist government for his public profession of the faith and forced to work in brutal conditions, offered the “Exorcism against Satan and the apostate angels” prayer to St. Michael composed by Pope Leo XIII during the October 25 Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) celebrated by Cardinal Raymond Burke as part of the 14th annual Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage.

As previously reported by LifeSiteNews, St. Peter’s Basilica has faced multiple desecrations in recent years, such as a bowl of plants “offered” to the pagan Pachamama “goddess” being placed on the basilica’s papal altar and received by Pope Francis during the closing Mass of the 2019 Amazon Synod. More recently, in early September, a Vatican-approved “LGBT pilgrimage” saw more than 1,000 “LGBT pilgrims” process through the Holy Door of St. Peter’s.

Part of the exorcism prayer that Cardinal Simoni recited is as follows:

Beseech the God of Peace to crush Satan under our feet, that he may no more be able to hold men captive and to harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that the mercies of the Lord may quickly come to our aid, that thou mayest seize the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan. We cast you out, every unclean spirit, every satanic power, every onslaught of the infernal adversary, every legion, every diabolical group and sect, in the name and by the power of our Lord Jesus + Christ!

LifeSite editor-in-chief John-Henry Westen noted how heroic it was for the Albanian cardinal to recite an exorcism, given the recent abominations that have been allowed to take place in the ancient basilica.

“So you’re telling me that in Saint Peter’s Basilica, which was profaned by the Pachamama Idol and the LGBT abomination, a heroic cardinal just recited an exorcism?!” he wrote.

In 2019, several Catholic prelates and scholars, such as Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, quickly denounced the idolatrous Pachamama act and called on the faithful to make reparation.

“It is urgent that we rediscover the meaning of prayer, reparation and penance, of fasting, of ‘little sacrifices, of the little flowers, and above all of silent and prolonged adoration before the Blessed Sacrament,” Viganò told LifeSite.

September’s sacrilegious LGBT procession into St. Peter’s was part of the Vatican’s official pilgrimage, organized by “La Tenda di Gionata” (“The Tent of Jonathan”), a pro-LGBT group that has falsely claimed that Scripture does not condemn homosexual relationships, and joined by Father James Martin’s heterodox Outreach group. During the pilgrimage, the group, led by a rainbow cross, many with their homosexual “partners,” dressed in rainbow colors with some waving “LGBT pride” flags, processed through the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica. One photo showed an unidentified man wearing a backpack that said “F*** the rules.”

Again, numerous prelates denounced the event and called for reparation to be made by clergy and laity alike.

“(The pilgrimage was) not only tragic, it was a blasphemous event in one of the most holy places of Christianity, which is the Basilica of St. Peter, the tomb of the Apostle St. Peter, and used as a promotion for legitimizing sodomy and other connotations with the tacit consent of the Holy See,” Bishop Athanasius Schneider told LifeSite after leading an act of reparation for the “LGBT pilgrimage” during the 2025 Catholic Identity Conference (CIC) in Pittsburgh.

“This is so grievous that it cannot be left without asking God for forgiveness and reparation and expiation,” the bishop added.

The Solemn TLM celebrated by Cardinal Burke from the altar of the chair of St. Peter, with the permission of Pope Leo XIV, drew thousands of pilgrims from across the globe, who filled the basilica.

The record-setting crowd at the first TLM to be held inside St. Peter’s in three years comes as speculation continues to mount over whether Pope Leo will reverse Pope Francis’ 2021 motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, which reversed the universal permissions for the celebration of the Tridentine Mass granted in Summorum Pontificum.

Gratias tibi, Cardinal Simoni. The exorcism was badly needed.

Thank God for this courageous prelate. It’s good that we have at least one.

It's good to know that there is still at least one Cardinal like this.
God bless him.
