Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Lord and Heavenly Father

Our LORD,
Our Strength!
You Are The The One Who Fortifies Us.
You Are Our Defense
And You Lift Us Up
To Do Things of Which We Could Not Even Dream.
If YOU are For Us, Who can be Against Us?

Let all that has been Concealed

I love the cantatas of Johannes Sebastian Bach. These were composed and performed on a weekly basis in his church in Leipzig, where he was the Music Director. While I had a similar job writing the music for Biker Church, Bach didn't have the tools that I had. Music Software, Recording Devices, and even a Printer/Copier for the lyrics and chords. I also was blessed with musicians who could improvise, so I didn't have to write out the arrangements. Bach, on the other hand, arranged everything for the players he had available, and wrote out all the parts. Although I'm pretty good at arranging, I never did it by writing out the parts. Multi-Track Recording was my way of doing it. But Bach had no such equipment. I often wonder that my less-than-stellar sight-reading skills are the result of never having to USE them.

I still wonder how Johannes could write a new cantata and have it ready for Sunday Morning. This was Every Week, and also special Holidays. Sometimes Bach would get hired to do some civic event, which also carried a deadline. There are over 200 cantatas for which we still have the sheet music.

Just yesterday, I was listening to a Cantata (#78) online, and reading the comments. One person posited that Bach would write the Cantata on Monday, Give it to his family to copy out the parts on Tuesday, Rehearse the orchestras and choirs (four churches!) on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and Perform it on Sunday. Then he would start over again on Monday. Hey...it was a living! And, since he had twenty children to support, he had to keep going!

In Bach's case the twenty children came in handy. They were the ones who did all the copying. Some of them were talented musicians themselves. Others faded into obscurity.

Jacob had twelve sons and one daughter, by four different women. Leah and Rachel were his "official" wives, and each of them brought a maidservant into the arrangement who became Jacob's concubines. This was not an ideal situation to say the least. Reuben, the First Born, had an affair with one of the concubines, thus disqualifying his Birthright.

As Jacob lay dying, he reminds Reuben of this unfortunate fact, and bestows the Honor upon Judah and, to a degree, Joseph.

He describes Reuben as "Unstable as Water" or "Turbulent as Water".

Perhaps if they had spent time copying sheet music instead of bickering among themselves, the brothers might have had a more focused and peaceful life!
