My Mom told me that the following incident happened in the Autumn of 1956, so I was only Four Years Old when it occurred, yet I remember everything, right down to the emotions I experienced.

Dad and Mom had bought a lovely little Cape-Cod-Style single family home on the GI Bill in a community called Mattapan, which was a neighborhood of the City of Boston. Our house backed onto the Neponset River, so, in a sense, it was "waterfront property", but this tributary to the Mighty Charles River was not what one would call "scenic". It was Off-Limits to the neighborhood and was polluted from industries further upriver.

When they first started naming hurricanes, we got two back-to-back, Carol and Diane (all female names back then!) and the land around the river became so waterlogged that no more water could be absorbed. Then the river overflowed its banks. We had a nice snug basement, so didn't expect to be affected by this. Mom and I were standing at the top of the basement stairs with a basket of laundry, and she opened the door. We both stared down into the basement and saw water rising up the stairs...the first step, the second step, up and up, percolating through the floor and marching up to greet us.

My next memory is of Mom, holding my brother Tom in her arms and me by the hand, stepping off the porch into a rowboat that had my Uncle Bill and Dad rowing. I am now nearly 70 years older, but the images of that memory are the clearest thing from my early childhood. It really made an impression on me!

During the raging hurricane season of 2004-2005, I was living in Florida, right in the path of the worst ones. My windows were sealed up tightly with galvanized Hurricane shutters, but, since the house was on a slab with no basement, it was vulnerable to flooding. During the "Eye" of Hurricane Wilma, I peeked out the door and saw water advancing to the house. In the street, I saw that the storm drains were clogged with debris and tree banches. Soon, all the ladies in the neighborhood were out there with shovels and rakes, freeing up the storm drains so our homes wouldn't get flooded. It was dangerous, because, if powerlines came down, we could have been electrocuted. When we saw the eyewall, and felt the winds pick up, we all ran back inside, but we had saved the neighborhood. That was a good thing, because we didn't see ANY government officials till about five weeks later.

I have a "thing" about floods. Perhaps it was my early childhood experience that put that fear into me. When I read about a deadly flood, it makes my own experience seem tame. As far as I know, nobody died in Mattapan in 1956 from the flood, and even Hurricane Wilma had very few fatalities. When I read about Tsunamis in the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, I shudder.

Since most of the planet is Ocean, one would expect these Tsunamis to be a regular occurrence. After all, the Moon is constantly pulling on the sea, causing two tides every day, all around the world. Tsunamis occur when there is a major earthquake or volcanic eruption that displaces huge amounts of water. Otherwise, the ocean maintains its pattern, day in and day out. Tsunamis, as horrible as they are, are thankfully rare.

If the moon was a different size or shape, or if it were a different distance from the earth, or if there were more than one of them, it would be vastly different. Recent Space Expeditions have shown us planets and moons that are in constant states of flux and change. Oceans of lava slosh around, massive ice packs crack and heave, and volcanoes pop up out of nowhere to strain and stress the land. Check out the Moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and you'll see that they all are different, and shockingly unstable.

In the Book of Job, we see all kinds of "theories" about Spirituality, Good vs. Evil, Guilt and Innocence, and Theology. We also see a twinkling of understanding that the Earth is unique among the heavenly bodies, that it was designed for LIFE.

I share your feelings of floods. We lost our home to Katrina. My youngest was about your age when you went through 1956.

Prayer For The Government Of Israel

Heavenly Father, I lift up the Prime Minster of Israel and the whole Kenesset, knowing that the Jewish nation are Your people and that the world at large seems to be turning their back on Israel as a nation, as prophesised in Your Word.

Give those in government the wisdom to make the right decisions and protect them I pray, from those that would seek their destruction. Lord, I pray that many in the government would seek Your face and prepare the nation to turn back to You as the only true God and only Protector of their nation, land and people.

I ask that You would continue to bless Your people with an understanding of the times, and I pray that many will come to hear the gospel and turn to Christ as their Messiah and Saviour.

Protect the government, those that are in the armed forces and those that are living in vulnerable places in the land and I pray for that day when Israel as a nation will turn back to seek Your face and come to recognise Jesus Christ as their God and Saviour. Father, I pray for the day when peace comes at last to that land, when Christ returns in power and great glory to set up his kingdom and I plead that many will come to recognise Who Jesus is and to trust Him as Saviour. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I was working in the New Orleans area in 1979. Lived through Hurricane Fred and the SkyLab deorbitting and crashing down to earth.

Some signs went up: Ready for Freddy. And there were Hurricane Parties and a favorite drink in the French Quarter was the Hurricane.
