Ezekiel 24:1-6

Jerusalem as a Cooking Pot

24 In the ninth year, in the tenth month on the tenth day, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, record this date, this very date, because the king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day. 3 Tell this rebellious people a parable and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Put on the cooking pot; put it on
    and pour water into it.

4  Put into it the pieces of meat,
    all the choice pieces—the leg and the shoulder.
Fill it with the best of these bones;
5      take the pick of the flock.
Pile wood beneath it for the bones;
    bring it to a boil
    and cook the bones in it.
6 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Woe to the city of bloodshed,
    to the pot now encrusted,
    whose deposit will not go away!
Take the meat out piece by piece
    in whatever order it comes.

There is a popular story that is often used by preachers when describing Social Change. This concerns a frog that is in a pan of water. The story goes that a frog will immediately jump out if the water is boiling, but it won't sense the danger if cold water is gradually heated up to the fatal temperature. Thus, the frog is boiled alive without realizing what is going on.

Preachers use this analogy to combat complacency in their congregations. I don't even know if the illustration is scientifically accurate, but it shows what happens when we are consumed by sin, little by little. An Enormous, egregious evil is obvious. We recoil from that. But the little things like gossip, slander, complaining, lying, cheating, and secret sins that nobody else knows about...those are like the water heating up to boiling temperature without us even realizing it.

Ezekiel's method of Prophecy was a Dramatic Episode of "Show and Tell". He did things like burying a silk sash in a riverbank to show how something beautiful can be ruined by sin. That was just one of his demonstrations. In this "demonstration", Ezekiel gets a pot of water boiling, and he cooks meat down to the bones. Then he burns the bones so the pot is encrusted and ruined. He must have drawn quite a crowd for this bit of street theater.

After Ezekiel ruined the meat and the pot he cooked it in, he explained that it was a picture of the coming Siege of Jerusalem. If he had just blown up the pot in the street, he would have made a lot of noise, but he wouldn't have told the story. It was going to be a long siege, the city would consume all the food and then starve, and, finally, the City would be destroyed. Like the Frog in the gradually boiling water, the people would be clueless until they were well into their own destruction.

Next time a preacher uses that analogy, be aware that Ezekiel already did it 2500 years ago.
