2 Chronicles 32:1-5

Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem

32 After all that Hezekiah had so faithfully done, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, thinking to conquer them for himself. 2 When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he intended to wage war against Jerusalem, 3 he consulted with his officials and military staff about blocking off the water from the springs outside the city, and they helped him. 4 They gathered a large group of people who blocked all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings[a] of Assyria come and find plenty of water?” they said. 5 Then he worked hard repairing all the broken sections of the wall and building towers on it. He built another wall outside that one and reinforced the terraces[b] of the City of David. He also made large numbers of weapons and shields.

It's been over forty years since I've visited Jerusalem, and yet I still remember the Sights, Sounds, and even the Smells of that City. I'm told a lot has changed since I've been there. The City of David Archaeological Site has been extensively excavated, including the Millo and the Gihon Spring Area. What was a Parking Lot during my visit there has now been excavated to reveal a wide avenue of Herodian Stonework, leading right to the Temple Stairs. In another section of the City, a brand new Cable-Stay Bridge, that looks just like the Zakim Bridge in Boston, graces the skyline. The Ancient is being dug up and exposed to the light, as the modern cityscape keeps the city from being just an open-air museum.

One of the "digs" that had recently become public during my visit was Hezekiah's Wall and Water System. This was an irrefutable evidence of the Passages we look at today and tomorrow.

Hezekiah was one of the few "good" kings of Israel and Judah. He trusted in God, but also took responsibility for the defense and safety of his people during perilous times. That's an excellent combination of qualities!
