[Catholic Caucus] Leo XIV Promotes a Chinese Traitor as Bishop, Casts Aside Confessor Bishop

Today, Leo XIV suppressed the two Chinese dioceses of Xiwanzi and Xuanhua, which were established in 1946 by Pius XII. He merged both dioceses to form the new diocese of Zhangjiakou.

The Diocese of Zhangjiakou was established by the Communists in Beijing in 1980 and has only been recognised by the Vatican today.

Leo XIV confirmed Monsignor Wang Zhengui as Bishop of Zhangjiakou. He was consecrated as a bishop today by Monsignor Guo Jincai, the president of the Chinese state group 'Patriotic Association'. Several other bishops and around 50 priests attended the ceremony.

The underground bishops of Xuanhua and Xiwanzi have always rejected the government-created Diocese of Zhangjiakou.

Bishop Augustine Cui Tai of Xuanhua is one of the most loyal to the Vatican. He has repeatedly been subjected to restrictive measures, including imprisonment and enforced disappearance. Today's Vatican note made no mention of his fate. He will simply “retire”.

Monsignor Joseph Yanen, who until now was the ordinary bishop of Xiwanzi, will be demoted to auxiliary bishop of Zhangjiakou.

The new Bishop Wang Zhengui of Zhangjiakou, 62, was ordained a priest on 24 May 1990 for the now-suppressed Diocese of Xianxian. He later exercised his ministry in the other suppressed Diocese of Xuanhua.

Rev Zhengui has betrayed Catholics for years.

In December 2019, he was elected director of the local 'Patriotic Association body' in Zhangjiakou (de facto administrator of the 'diocese').

As early as 2019, Licas.news reported that the State Church of Beijing intended to suppress the two Catholic dioceses in the area and appoint Rev Wang Zhengui as Bishop of Zhangjiakou.

In the same year, Wang Zhengui formally announced and signed measures to prohibit minors from entering churches. After a Eucharist, he declared that 'from now on, only adults can be acolytes; children are not allowed' in churches.

Why, Lord? The faithful of China do not deserve this. And how are the children going to come to Jesus? He said “Let the little ones come to me”.
