🇺🇸Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem 🇮🇱(9/9/25)[Prayer]

Jonah 4

Jonah’s Anger at the Lord’s Compassion

4 But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

4 But the Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

5 Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant[a] and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. 7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”

9 But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”

“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”

10 But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”

Footnotes

a Jonah 4:6 The precise identification of this plant is uncertain; also in verses 7, 9 and 10.

I forget what the subject was, but I remember the imperious voice of the new teacher declaiming:

"NOBODY gets an "A" in my class. In fact very few of you will even PASS"

being accustomed to getting "All A"s, I was very disturbed by this. Was she saying that, no matter how hard we worked, we would never please her? Why even try? If she was trying to motivate us, she failed utterly.

Now, if she had said:

"This is going to be a tough class. If you want an "A", you're going to have to work very hard for it.",

THAT would have made sense. Why on earth would a teacher want her students to fail?

I'm willing to bet that there are many of you reading this who remember a teacher like that. It's more common than it should be.

Jonah didn't even want to go to Nineveh in the first place. He booked passage on a ship that would take him as far away as possible, and we saw how that turned out. When he finally preached to the city, the actually repented, and were saved from destruction. Jonah's reaction was bizarre. One thinks that he actually wanted the city to decline God's invitation and be destroyed. He went so far as going up on a hillside so that he would get a good view of the carnage.

God used a little worm to show Jonah the lesson of compassion. A plant had sprung up to shelter Jonah from the hot sun, and then a worm ate it. exposing Jonah to the sun again.

When Jonah complained, God compared Jonah's "compassion" for a plant against God's compassion for the men, women, children, and even the animals of Nineveh.

I wonder if Jonah finally learned something, and got an "A".

Come and Pray Prayers For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

”Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” (Hosea 6:3 NIV)

Psalm 61

To the leader: with stringed instruments. Of David.

1 Hear my cry, O God;
listen to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I call to you,
when my heart is faint.

Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I;
3 for you are my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.

4 Let me abide in your tent for ever,
find refuge under the shelter of your wings.
Selah
5 For you, O God, have heard my vows;
you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

6 Prolong the life of the king;
may his years endure to all generations!
7 May he be enthroned for ever before God;
appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him!

8 So I will always sing praises to your name,
as I pay my vows day after day.

Amen.

Oh the goodness and compassion of our God. This story refutes those who say that if we are not obedient to God, He will find someone else and throw us aside. Even with a bad attitude, He used Jonah and Jonah bore abundant fruit.
