Josh Hilburn is the lead pastor of Gather Houston. Founded in 2019, they are a “Christian community of healing passionate about inclusion, justice, and practicing the way of Jesus” with a wild confession of faith.
At a recent Q & A, he was asked about the church’s beliefs on homosexuality. In a refreshingly honest take, Hilburn explained that he cares more about what his LGBTQ friends and family think and feel than what the bible says:
It’s important to me what the Bible says about it. It is. I love the Bible. I preach from it every week. It’s very important to me what the Bible says about it.
But
We say every week that we want the kind of faith that the people in front of us are more important than our beliefs. And the people I know and love, my LGBTQ friends and family members, more important to me. They’re more important to me than what the Bible says.
…And so for me, if we stand here and say every week that the people in front of us are more important than our beliefs, there’s a big group of people that are really struggling and I want to be affirming adults for them no matter what.
So you can disagree with me about what the Bible says, but there’s a whole big group of people that for me are not up for debate.”

Do people really attend these so-called churches?
Unfortunately, Sir, God is more important than the pleasure of any friends. II Timothy 3:4
I guess so
Basically pick your own religion..but please stop saying you’re Christan or bible based...this guy is a pagan.
Can someone please tell this pastor that there is NO gay gene?
Morons like this subsist on false dichotomies.
He’s announcing the beginning of his loss of faith.
I would think that bringing his BLTQXYZ friends to a better understanding God’s word and our meaning and purpose in the world would be his higher priority.
Orthodox clergy have always stood on “Hate the sin, love the sinner.” Run the traplines as you wish. When it arises, I usually steer this conversation to Jesus and the woman at the well. He forgave her, but also told her to go and sin no more. The sin, guilt, repentance thing is kinda basic.
Woke clergy now insists that to love the sinner, we must embrace the sin lest the sinner feel guilt, shame, or any call to change. There is no God higher than our own desires and ego. Which is the usual interpretation of what the serpent told Eve in the Garden of Eden.
The liberal churches have gone over into the service of the serpent, who is now to be regarded as the revealer of mysteries and the liberator of mankind, not the Great Deceiver and the father of lies.
The Bible was never important to you. If it was you would try to save your friends’ souls rather than encouraging their error.
Another “Jim Jones Christian”.
Sadly….yes.

Says it all.
Seems more like he’d never had faith to begin with. He is just announcing his true allegiance.
I’d think he could have gone for a better line of work if this was how he felt. You don’t see a lot of vegetarians working in butcher shops
Well said.
👍 👍👍👍👍
Are we sure he had any faith to begin with?
It’s not often you hear of someone condemning their self to Hell.
I don’t know, but he shouldn’t be allowed near any children!
