In the late 1970s and early 1980s, I became an avid quilter. I would piece the quilt by machine and quilt it by hand. I was getting pretty good at it, and sold quite a few. I did mostly traditional quilt patterns, and avoided those that involved Applique'. That meant that I never learned Hawaiian Quilting, which is usually one GIANT Applique', a Symmetrical Design with lots of edges, sewn onto one giant sheet of fabric. Here's a Picture.

Although I had sold some quilts and given some as gifts, my first real Commission was from my friend Lillian, and it was VERY specific. She specified the size, color, and design of the quilted wall hanging that would be adorning her home. It was to be 1.5 Ft. X 3 Ft, Warm colors of Burnt Orange, Yellow, and Red, have Five Loops on the Top, Feature a Log Cabin Picture, and contain the Scripture from Joshua 24:15.

The Dimensions were easy. The Loops simple, the Log Cabin a Breeze, but the Scripture had to squeezed into the space provided, and the letters all had to be APPLIQUED. That meant each letter had to be cut out, the edges folded over and ironed down (ouch!) and the letter hand stitched to the base fabric. They had to be spaced appropriately, all the same size, and actually be legible. I almost said "No, Lil. I can't do that." But I forged ahead, and finally, with burned and pricked fingertips, I presented her with the Wall Hanging.

It hung in her Virginia Beach Condo for 40 years until her death in 2013. I have no idea what happened to it, but hope it found a good home.

You can bet, though, I'll never forget Joshua 24:15. It's SEARED (and quilted) into my Memory.
