Proverbs 8:22-36

“The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works,[a][b]
    before his deeds of old;
23  I was formed long ages ago,
    at the very beginning, when the world came to be.
24  When there were no watery depths, I was given birth,
    when there were no springs overflowing with water;
25  before the mountains were settled in place,

In Today's Scripture we see"Wisdom" personified as a lovely, wise woman, whom God created even before He created the Earth. Lady Wisdom (also named "Sophia") was not a real person, but a poetic embodiment of the fact that all Wisdom comes from God. He made it in the first place. One of the wisest people I ever knew was my friend Lil. Here is a story about Lil that I shared with you many years ago:

Right off the Highway in the shadow of Big Blue Hill was a 24-Hour Howard Johnson's Restaurant. It was a favorite of Bikers and Musicians because of its late hours and proximity to the Highway. Since I am both, I spent a lot of time there, but my late husband Mike and I noticed that EVERY time we ate there, something weird would happen. Sometimes it was just a crazy customer, sometimes a natural phenomenon, but always SOMETHING. We had a private joke that it had been probably built upon an Ancient Indian Burial Ground, and that Chief Chiccatawbut (the REAL Chief of the local tribe during Colonial times) was offended. This was further augmented when the Massachusetts Inter-tribal Pow-wow took place every year in the fields across the street. We called the restaurant "THE HAUNTED HOJO'S".

My dear friend Lil was on leave from her missionary journey in Romania, and was scheduled to speak at my church to raise funds, so the three of us stopped at The Haunted Hojo's for breakfast on the way. She and I were both dressed entirely in the Romanian National Costume, but we figured that The Pow-Wow dancers always came in in full regalia so we didn't look TOO weird...not at all.

Lil, a sensitive and spiritual lady, knew immediately that the waitress was upset about something. Although the woman was bravely trying to hide it, she was in deep distress. Still, she took our order and bravely soldiered through her Sunday Morning, and Lil and I started to pray for her quietly.

Suddenly, without warning, the manager came out from the kitchen, and LOUDLY, in front of the whole restaurant, FIRED the waitress, who then dissolved in tears, ran from the room. She still had her order book in her hand, with our breakfast orders on it.

Lil stood up, faced down the Manager and reprimanded him for being so mean, and then the three of us (two of whom looked like we belonged in the Romanian National Dance Ensemble) stormed out of the restaurant and encountered the weeping waitress in the parking lot. We gathered around her, prayed for her, comforted her, and then went along, hungry, to church.

We never ate at The Haunted Hojo's ever again, and it is no longer there. Lil and Mike are also passed. I, alone, am left to tell the tale.

While "Song of Solomon" is considered King Solomon's most intimate poetry, this short Passage about "Lady Wisdom" is, in my opinion, much more "romantic". By personifying Wisdom as a beautiful woman, Solomon reveals his most secret desire. He could have any woman he wanted (and DID!), but when asked by God what he wanted most, he replied "Wisdom".

Some scholars argue that this is a personification of Christ, , but, in my most humble opinion, I respectfully disagree. First of all, because the character is female, I don't see it referring to Jesus. Secondly, Lady Wisdom is created. Jesus, on the other hand, is Eternal. Some of the attributes of Wisdom are Christlike, because He is the All-Wise God, after all.

My Friend Lil was the wisest lady I ever met, BECAUSE she pointed people to Jesus.
