Those of you who know me have probably heard my rap:

"I Like Big BOOKS,
And I Can Not Lie..."

By "big" books, I don't mean Coffee Table Books, which are often long on images and short on text. When I say "Big Books", I mean Books like "The Brothers Karamazov", "Moby Dick", "Anna Karenina", War and Peace", and the Triple Crown of Big Books, "Lord of the Rings". I read very fast, but don't seem to miss anything, which is a gift. Sometimes it's a mixed blessing, because I run out of books. Well, I mused, you can't get much "bigger" than "Game of Thrones". That will keep me busy for a little while at least.

After about 400 pages (not even half of the first book of many), I gave up. It wasn't Reading Comprehension that caused the breakup, nor was it the stilted, archaic language. It wasn't even the "sax and violins" (if you catch my drift). It was unlike "Lord of the Rings", which, while never mentioning God, has a Righteous Spirit behind it, governing the delineation between Right and Wrong, and describing perfectly the Perils of Temptation and Power, to which we are ALL vulnerable. Tolkien insisted that LOTR is NOT an allegory like "Pilgrim's Progress", but, in my opinion, the allegory is present whether Tolkien meant to have it be there or not. (Same thing with Moby Dick, which I just finished for the tenth time.)

The "Righteous Spirit" is missing from GoT, again, in my humble opinion. All through the book (at least what I read) are dark, negative, cold, people, places, and things. The only characters I LIKED were the Direwolf Pups. the worst part of the book(s) is the pervasive slogan:

"Winter Is Coming".

Most of you know that I HATE Winter. But, at least, on Planet Earth, there are seasons. At the Equator, not so much, but even at the Poles there is "Summer" and "Winter".

In the mythical Land of GoT, the Summers can go on for years, and the Winters can go on for an undetermined length of time. You never know when the Winter is going to end. At first, I was taken aback by the extreme youth of the characters doing "adult" things. Then I realized that their lives weren't counted in YEARS, but in "Summers". That meant that they could have actually been young adults rather than children of 6 or 7 years old. Once I'd figured that out, it made the characters a wee bit less "creepy", I noticed that the HBO Series used Young Adults to play the roles rather than little kids. (WHEW!).

Anyway, all of the above reasons contributed to my discomfort with this "Big Book", but the worst part of it was that the SEASONS weren't consistent. That consistency of Seasons goes all the way back to Noah, and sealed with The Rainbow as the Sign of God's Covenant with Humankind. The length of the seasons may vary with your latitude, but it remains consistent. Sometimes we have a really bad winter, and sometimes a miserable hot summer. Different planetary forces such as volcanoes and earthquakes can cause weather changes and tsunamis, but the Earth corrects itself and the next season seems more "normal".

So when someone says:

"Winter Is Coming".

We can reply with confidence:

"Yep. And Then Comes Spring.".
