đşđ¸Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem đŽđą(8/24/25)[Prayer]

Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
2 Kings 5
Naaman Healed of Leprosy
5Â Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.[a]
2Â Now bands of raiders from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naamanâs wife. 3Â She said to her mistress, âIf only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.â
4Â Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. 5Â âBy all means, go,â the king of Aram replied. âI will send a letter to the king of Israel.â So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents[b] of silver, six thousand shekels[c] of gold and ten sets of clothing. 6Â The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: âWith this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.â
7Â As soon as the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his robes and said, âAm I God? Can I kill and bring back to life? Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me!â
8Â When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: âWhy have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.â 9Â So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elishaâs house. 10Â Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, âGo, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.â
11Â But Naaman went away angry and said, âI thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. 12Â Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldnât I wash in them and be cleansed?â So he turned and went off in a rage.
13Â Naamanâs servants went to him and said, âMy father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, âWash and be cleansedâ!â 14Â So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.
15Â Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God. He stood before him and said, âNow I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.â
16Â The prophet answered, âAs surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.â And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.
17Â âIf you will not,â said Naaman, âplease let me, your servant, be given as much earth as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but the Lord. 18Â But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning on my arm and I have to bow there alsoâwhen I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.â
19Â âGo in peace,â Elisha said.
After Naaman had traveled some distance, 20Â Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, âMy master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the Lord lives, I will run after him and get something from him.â
21Â So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. âIs everything all right?â he asked.
22Â âEverything is all right,â Gehazi answered. âMy master sent me to say, âTwo young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent[d] of silver and two sets of clothing.ââ
23Â âBy all means, take two talents,â said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. 24Â When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left.
25Â When he went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, âWhere have you been, Gehazi?â
âYour servant didnât go anywhere,â Gehazi answered.
26Â But Elisha said to him, âWas not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take money or to accept clothesâor olive groves and vineyards, or flocks and herds, or male and female slaves? 27Â Naamanâs leprosy will cling to you and to your descendants forever.â Then Gehazi went from Elishaâs presence and his skin was leprousâit had become as white as snow.

I was so disappointed, but I knew Mike was right. We stood on the banks of the Jordan River, at a facility that had been built be Calvary Chapel, in an area near where John The Baptist was said to have Baptized Jesus. There was a dressing room and a stack of white robes that one could change into in order to be baptized in the Jordan. The people on our bus tour were lining up.
I really wanted to do this, but Mike said we had already been baptized. Well, I knew that, but this was the Jordan River! he replied:
"One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism."
While I now wonder if that was the precise meaning of Ephesians 4:5, I understood. It wasn't the RIVER, it was the BAPTISM that counted.
Naaman's take on the Jordan was a little different. Compared to the mighty rivers further north, the Jordan looked like a muddy trickle. His pride was such that he was insulted that Elisha would specify that his "cure" would only work in the Jordan.
However, it was not that the Jordan had any special powers to heal (or baptize for that matter). The key to the whole puzzle was Obedience to God. God, through Elisha, said "The Jordan" and "Seven" times. Not the Euphrates, or the Tigris, or three times or a hundred.
Now, if Elisha had said:
"Go to this particular Spa on the Dead Sea. My Cousin owns it, and I'll tell him you're coming. Stay a week, get all the Spa treatments (Especially the Mineral Mud Bath...It's AWESOME!) , and float at least an hour a day in the Dead Sea. The minerals are great for your skin and can cure you of leprosy. It might even be covered by your Health Insurance!"
If Elisha had said that, and Naaman refused, it would have been not such a big deal. But the Jordan has no such healing properties. It didn't have a Spa. It was, and still is, a somewhat unimpressive river. Dunking oneself in it to cure a disease is downright goofy, and Naaman knew it.
Sometimes God asks us to do things that seem strange or silly at the time. Then, years later, we look back and see the chain of events that emanated from that action, and we have a moment of insight into God's Plan.
In the meantime, though, I might like to look into a week at Elisha's Cousin's Dead Sea Spa.

Interesting the Naaman felt he was above bathing in the Jordan and raged about it. Thanks to God he experienced an attitude adjustment.

Psalm 121
A Song of Ascents.
1 I lift up my eyes to the hillsâ
from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 He who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time on and for evermore.
