I recently ordered the 3CD set of Bach's St. Matthew's Passion, and the 2CD Set of St. John's Passion.

I loaded them up into my 5-CD Changer and (Voila!) Nearly six hours of uninterrupted Bach-Induced Bliss.

Listening in and out while doing household chores, I noticed something. Bach often reused themes that he had written in earlier cantatas, or in other contexts. Because he wrote in "real time" to have a new Cantata every Sunday, it was perfectly acceptable to recycle some of his earlier melodies.

With that in mind, I feel free to share this little story about "Short People" that I wrote on this site many years ago.

As an avid bicyclist in my teenage years, I felt quite comfortable on two wheels. I had even commuted to college daily by bicycle, a distance of about ten miles over very hilly city streets.

Now, when my husband and I were first married, we were very poor, and lived a Bohemian lifestyle in Inner-City Boston, using public transportation and walking everywhere. It became clear that we needed a vehicle, and Mike's Mom gave us $200 to get something.

That "something" was an old, used Honda CB350 Motorcycle, which neither of us knew how to ride. But, heck, it was just a bicycle with a motor on it, right?

So I got on the thing, in a little parking lot enclosed by a stone wall, put it in gear and slowly let out the clutch. My feet couldn't reach the ground (I am 5' 2") but they don't reach the ground on my bicycle either so who knew? Anyway, the bike leaped forward and began to race towards the stone wall at a blistering 15 mph. It was then that I realized I didn't know where the brakes were. Instinctively, I pulled both hand levers and pushed down both feet. Luckily, half of those items were the front and rear brake. The Bike screeched to a halt 4" from the stone wall, and I touched my tiptoes, ballerina style, to the pavement. I was hooked! In the intervening 46 years I have gone from the Honda CB350 to a Honda CX650, to a Harley 1100cc Sportster, to finally the 93FXR Superglide that I ride now. All of the bikes were too tall for me to ride, and more than once I found myself underneath it at a STOP sign. Finally, I had the Superglide lowered, front and back, chopping about two inches off the suspension to fit my both feet firmly flat on the ground. It is NOT like a bicycle!

To this day, when offered "Hi-Top" seating in a restaurant, I refuse. "I'm a Biker", I say. "I need both feet planted firmly on the ground."

Zacchaeus and I share a dilemma. We are both short, and it affects my enjoyment of movies, concerts, and eating out, if someone taller than I sits in front of me. I can't reach the strap on the bus, nor can I find my way through a crowd. I would have had to climb a tree to see Jesus too! Like me, on a too-tall, top-heavy bike, Zacchaeus was in a precarious position. It was humbling to have to chop my bike's suspension, and I hope I never hit one of Boston's famous potholes! But I have my feet firmly planted on the ground, and have the 650 pound steel monster under my control. "Blue" and I have ridden nine Rolling Thunder Rallies, 30,000 miles through Civil War Battlefields, Barrier Island, The Florida Keys, The Blue Ridge Parkway, and we are now both officially Short, overweight, American Antiques and are growing old together.

There are now over 46,000 miles on that bike which means I've added another 16,000 since 2018, when I wrote that story. I still ride, and, thank God, my feet still reach the ground.

When tackling the Book of Revelation, it is imperative that your feet reach the ground, and that you are firmly grounded in the Gospel. There are too many ways that a person can "Short Circuit" themselves if they are not properly grounded. Many cults, even in modern times, spring up due to a misinterpretation of either the characters or the events in the book. Here are a few contrasts that can lead to confusion:

A Slain Lamb vs. A Conquering Warrior King
Angels vs. Demons
Devastating Flood vs. Fountains of Living Water
A Woman Clothed in the Sun vs. The Whore of Babylon,

Plus a wild assortment of Monsters, Dragons, and Beasts.

Some religions spend too much time in Revelation, and some avoid it completely. That's why I appreciate yesterday's comment thanking me for "not being afraid of tackling the more difficult passages of the Bible." (That was a super nice thing to say!) To be honest, even after 40 years, I still approach the Apocalyptic Books with trepidation.

Stay Grounded.
