Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
Revelation 12:13-17

13 When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.

All the people in today's story have passed on, but it is a fun tale of how we often walk with, work with, and socialize with folks who have done great things. And we don't even realize it!

My friend George had written a Christmas song with two other songwriters, and asked me if I would help produce a Music Video for him. My job was to take the raw sheet music, arrange it, produce it, and record it in my home studio, and then sync it to images from stock footage of the Holy Land and a Nativity Play. He introduced me to the other songwriters, Hugo and Luigi, who were older than I was, and very traditional "Old School" Songwriters. I enjoyed Hugo's repartee a lot, and we liked to "talk shop" about the music business. He also performed in some of the same venues as I did, and was a big favorite at the Soldier's Home in Chelsea. Hugo used to say "I wrote a song for Elvis!", and I thought "Sure. EVERYBODY has written a song for Elvis", so I smiled and nodded my head and moved on.

Years later, long after my friends passed away, I was asked to perform a special song at a Wedding. I was given the sheet music, and saw that it was an Elvis song, a very famous one, and there were the three names of Hugo, Luigi, and George. The song was one of the most beloved and iconic songs that Elvis EVER performed, I CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU.

For Two Thousand Years, scholars have argued about the identity of the Woman in Revelation 12. Roman Catholic Scholars say she is The Virgin Mary. The iconography that emerges from that interpretation show The Virgin Mary crowned with Twelve Stars, crushing the head of the serpent.

Protestant and Evangelical scholars see the Woman as Israel. The Twelve Stars in her crown are the Twelve Tribes, and the Flood of Persecution into the Desert is the Roman Destruction of the Temple in 70AD and the resulting Diaspora of the Jews. That also makes sense. (It could be BOTH. It wouldn't be the first time Prophecy is Fulfilled more than once). Everybody agreed that the Man-child that the Virgin bore is Jesus, so at least they agree on something.

There are even more interpretations, some as recent as the 21st Century.

In 2017, the Constellations of Virgo (the Virgin) Leo the Lion, and Draco the Dragon all lined up in the sky, along with the Planet Jupiter. This is not "Astrology" but just the position of the stars and planets that were visible on that particular September 23rd. The funny thing was that it formed a visual representation of the events in Revelation 12. People got all excited about it, then it happened, and then...NOTHING happened. Oh Well.

But, looking back on the History of the past eight years, maybe something DID get set in motion on 9/23/17. Certainly there has been a "flood" of persecution intensified since that time. Both Christians and Jews have been experiencing renewed hatred all over the world, and there seems to be a rise in antisemitism everywhere.

Like Hugo, who wasn't kidding when he told me he wrote a song for Elvis, maybe that "Sign in the Heavens" was a "song" that we didn't recognize at the time.

One thing I've learned is when an Old Guy who's been in the Music Business tells me he wrote a song for Elvis, I probably should believe him.
