Dear Father in Heaven,

Certain things are a matter of public record. There are people who scour the public records daily, and attempt to obtain "customers" by zeroing in on other people's life-events. If you have ever had a baby, bought a home, had a change in credit status, or been cited in a traffic violation, your mailbox soon became flooded with "offers". By far, the worst activity of this kind was immediately after my sudden and violent widowhood seven years ago. The phone rang non-stop, even interrupting my calls as I made funeral arrangements. There was no "caller ID" at the time so I had to answer. I was so flustered that I actually fell for some of the scams and lost what little money I had. My mailbox and email had so many "offers"that I couldn't find my REAL mail. People were even driving up to my home and hanging their "offers" on the doorknob! When people are in trauma, they are very vulnerable to scams and don't have their usual "safety alarms". Now, fourteen years later, I am so wary of scam calls and email that I have been known to "spoof" them by keeping telemarketers on the phone only to lead them on a wild goose chase and have them hang up on ME! Of course, I may be missing out on the "lost fabled gold of the Libyan Empire that Qaddafi's widow will share with me if I would only give her by bank account number and password" LOL.

My sister was recently widowed, but she didn't seem to get as many scam calls until she took care of business and paid off the debts that accumulated during her husband's long illness. Then her phone started to ring off the hook. The mere fact that she had cleaned up her credit score was enough to trigger an avalanche of "offers". Of course, she knew what I had been through, but, also, her phone detects probable scams before she even answers, That way, she is able to reject the call. Ah...Technology!

The people that Jesus chose to be His disciples were a tough bunch of men. The life of a Commercial Fisherman is not easy now, and it certainly wasn't back then. I imagine that Peter was the toughest of them all, and probably the least likely to be taken in by a scammer. He wasn't afraid to speak his mind, and could be stubborn and boastful. A scammer would have a hard time getting a word in edgewise with Peter.

He also had to be an intelligent man, running a business which included Danger, Weather, Equipment Maintenance, and Personel Management. His product was extremely perishable and had to go onto the market that very day or it would be spoiled. And, on top of all that, his MOTHR-IN-LAW lived with him!

One day, an itinerant preacher stands on the shore and calls out to him. It's been a rough night, no fish, and so a very meager, depressing day ahead. And now, this Man on the shore is telling him to lower his nets one more time. What kind of a scam could this be?

But, there's something about the Man on the shore. Peter lowers his nets, and he gets so many fish that his nets might break.

There are a lot of scammers out there who target Christians in particular, maybe because we are trusting and try to think the best of everybody. However, Jesus tells us to be "Wise as Serpents and Innocent as Doves". The Holy Spirit will give us discernment, if we would only ask.

The Sea of Galilee doesn't look that big from a satellite photo, but when you are on a little boat in the middle of it, it seems like an ocean.

May God grant us discernment and wisdom to hear His voice even in the midst of the sea.
