21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses: 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp.”

I spilled some coffee on the counter this morning, and opened up the cabinet under the sink to get some wet-wipes. Alas...I had used the last one some time ago, and the container was empty. Then I saw a three-pack of disinfectant wipes at the very back of the cabinet, underneath some sponges. I had to bend way down to reach them, and managed to grab the package without tipping over or banging my head. Underneath the package were (ARRGGHH!!!!!) mouse droppings. I almost shreiked. I HATE MICE! It's not that I'm afraid of them, but they are very unsanitary and could be carrying the deadly Hanta Virus. Everything had to come out of the cabinet, and it had to be cleaned and disinfected. That's on Today's agenda, and i already have the blues because it's my 53rd Wedding Anniversary.

The Bible doesn't say "Cleanliness is next to Godliness", but there is a lot about "contamination" in the Old Testament. Here are a couple of stories from long ago about "contamination".

We stayed an extra week in Jerusalem after the touring group had gone home. We were on our own, and it was terrific. We went places we would not have seen in any tour group, and were exhausted by the end of our extra week, and, of course, TOTALLY out of money. The following two stories are relevant to today's Scripture about Rules and Regulations, especially about eating.

(First Story) After checking out of the hotel in Jerusalem, we paid our last shekel to get a ride to Ben Gurion Airport. We schlepped our baggage (which had increased exponentially during our trip with purchases) up to the counter and produced our plane tickets. We were a bit late, and the plane was already boarding.

"Boarding Passes?" the official asked. I handed him the tickets.

"These are NOT boarding passes These are merely vouchers saying you paid for tickets. WHERE are your Boarding Passes?"

I went on a tearful tirade explaining how we HAD been with a tour, the agent was supposed to turn the vouchers into boarding passes, but we stayed an extra week, were American Citizens, had used up all our money, had to catch a connecting flight in New York, had no place to go, were about to be stranded, homeless, in the "war-torn Middle East", had no way of contacting the agent, the agent told us he would get the boarding passes but didn't..."

"Oh, TO HELL WITH YOUR AGENT!!!!" he muttered, as he stamped our vouchers, miraculously turning them into boarding passes. "The Plane is on the runway. RUN RUN RUN!!!!!"

The plane was at the head of the runway, and the stairway was just being removed when we ran across the tarmac, dragging our luggage behind us. And so, we got on the plane, just like the last scene in the movie "The Year of Living Dangerously". The theme music (by Vangelas) of that movie plays in my head whenever I remember that event.

(Second Story) Once on the plane, I found myself seated next to a very pious Yeshiva Student, dressed in traditional garb, with side curls and a hat which he did not remove on the plane. He was a very nice, sweet, polite, young man, and very knowledgeable and intelligent. We had great conversations about nearly every subject during the eleven hour flight to New York.

When the meals were served, the Flight Attendant passed right over the Yeshiva Student and handed me my Kosher El Al Meal.

"Aren't you going to eat?" I asked. "It's Kosher."

"Mine is coming later," he said.

Sure enough, the Flight Attendant came back with a special meal wrapped in special foil, with Hebrew Symbols emblazoned upon it. Evidently, El Al had special "Glatt Kosher" meals for the people who did not deem the Kosher Menu "Kosher Enough". I thought that was very nice and accommodating of them. After all, Israel IS the "Jewish State" and it was very sensitive of them to have something for ALL their passengers.

So, eleven hours passed full of lively stimulating conversation. We talked about the Bible, about Israel, about politics, about New York, etc etc etc. When the plane touched down in New York City after a bumpy flight, the Captain played "Hallelujah La Olam" (Praise God For Everything) through the speakers. Out of habit, I reached out to shake my hand with the Yeshiva Student. Instantly, he recoiled, and stuttered..."I. Can't. Don't. Touch. Me."

Instantly, I withdrew my hand and apologized. I had forgotten that he was not allowed to touch a woman, let alone a Gentile one.

Peter was as pious as this young Yeshiva Student when it came to food. Along with not touching "unclean" food, Peter was also concerned about entering the home of, or touching, a Gentile.

God had to show him, with the dramatic dream of the sheet, that the Message was for ALL People, and that nothing created by HIM could be called "unclean".

I wonder how, in the strictest and safest airline in the world, a ticket agent could get away with stopping an airplane on the runway for two passengers who did not have the documentation. Could it be El Al's practice of "profiling" every passenger that walks through its gates long before the tickets are even issued? Or could that guy have gotten some kind of vision to make it happen? I'll never know, but it would make a good movie with a Vangelas Soundtrack.

In Today's Scripture passage, we are introduced to Soldiers returning from Battle. Everything they bring home with them has to be "decontaminated", even their bodies and the clothes on their backs. It was like the Apollo 11 Astronauts returning from the Moon. They were placed into immediate quarantine upon their triumphant arrival back on Earth.

Since neither Nuclear nor Chemical Warfare were going on in Ancient Israel, it's safe to assume that the cleansing ritual was Spiritual in nature rather than biological.

As far as my Kitchen Cabinet goes, it's BOTH.

A Jewish co-worker, years ago, pointed out markings on packaged snacks and other foods. Circle K, was Kosher. Circle U, was ultra Kosher. Never see that on Pork Rinds.

Thank you ML. I too on the way home from my trip to Israel sat next to a student. I often, to this day, pray that he would see Yeshua in the studies. Oh I too had a mouse this week. I can’t tell you the instant insanity that I fall into the second I see one, I can’t. It was trap caught in the kitchen, I’m still sick yuk! As always, Joining in prayer and thanks.
