Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

Over eight years ago, I shared this story here on this site, when the Scripture Portion was from the Book of Acts, describing Paul's experience being shipwrecked on the island of Malta:

The Hawaiian islands are beautiful, but the story of how they became a Possession of the USA and subsequently a State is not nearly as pretty. Without going into great detail (but it is an interesting study), it is sufficient to say that there are some Native Hawaiians who harbor resentment to this day. Others are proud Americans, like me. (I have a large portion of my own DNA pointing to Canadian First Nation Ancestry, but I am PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN).

An unfortunate description of White People among the resentful ones is "Haole" which comes from the word for "ghost". Anyway, today's story relates to the hospitality that Paul and his shipmates received on the island of Malta. Remember, Paul and most of the others were PRISONERS when they were shipwrecked, so they already had a bad reputation among the Island People.

Hubby and I had rented a couple of aging Harley Davidson Sportsters on the Island of Maui. We rode the Hana Road together (SCARY!), rode around the backside of the Volcano, rode up 10,000 feet to the top of Mt. Haleakela, and even on the treacherous roads of West Maui. We were having a blast. Suddenly we found ourselves in the midst of several Native Hawaiians on bikes, all in the same "club". We knew this because their club colors were TATTOOED on their bare backs. These were not just "Credit-Card Harley Riders." No. These were the Native Hawaiian Version of "outlaw bikers".

I smiled my biggest smile and said, "Can we ride with YOU?"

"Who the (expletive) are YOU?" asked the Leader of the Pack.

"WE'RE HAOLES ON HARLEYS!" I exclaimed.

With that, the entire group burst into raucous laughter, and the leader said, "I like your style! Come on, Let's Ride!"

The group took us all over the Island, to hidden roads we had no idea existed, and treated us to BBQ. We even got stopped by the local police who asked us to slow down because we were "scaring the tourists." I didn't have the heart to tell him that Hubby and I WERE "Tourists". We may have been tourists, and we may have been haoles, but we were treated to some real Island Hospitality that day.

The whole event that I just related took place in and around the once beautiful and picturesque Town of Lahaina, Maui. Lahaina had been a Whaling Community back in the 19th Century, and the Architecture and Ambiance were very similar to that of Nantucket Island, off the Coast of Massachusetts. It had become very "Arty", and there were galleries, restaurants, shops, and bistros that lined Front Street. Although it was a big tourist town, it was also the home of a large population of Native Hawaiians, who lived in small wooden houses that had been in their families for decades.

In 2023, the entire town of Lahaina was wiped out by a wildfire. There are questions that have not been answered to this day regarding water supply, evacuation routes that were blocked, inadequate warning, and other horrific errors. In my opinion, there has still been no accountability for the lives and property lost on that day.

Front Street was blocked, and people were being roasted alive in their cars. The people who were able to get out of the cars ran down to the Marina and jumped into the sea. Amid boats that had burst into flames, the survivors stood in the water for hours, grabbing a breath of smokey air whenever they could. It was desperation of the most nightmarish kind, and yet, the seawater kept them alive as long as they were immersed in it.

"Immersion" is what the word "Baptize" means in the original New Testament Greek. Although a lot of other Baptism Traditions have emerged in 2000 years, the original meaning of the word is dramatically illustrated by the Survivors of the Maui Hellfire that would have consumed them if they had not been fully immersed in the sea.

Just my thoughts.
