Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
Psalm 65:5-13

5 By awesome deeds You answer us in righteousness, O God of our salvation,
         You who are the trust of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest sea;
6 Who establishes the mountains by His strength,
         Being girded with might;

7 Who stills the roaring of the seas,
         The roaring of their waves,
         And the tumult of the peoples.

8 They who dwell in the ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs;
         You make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy.

9 You visit the earth and cause it to overflow;
         You greatly enrich it;
         The stream of God is full of water;
         You prepare their grain, for thus You prepare the earth.

10 You water its furrows abundantly,
         You settle its ridges,
         You soften it with showers,
         You bless its growth.

11 You have crowned the year with Your bounty,
         And Your paths drip with fatness.

12 The pastures of the wilderness drip,
         And the hills gird themselves with rejoicing.

13 The meadows are clothed with flocks
         And the valleys are covered with grain;
         They shout for joy, yes, they sing.

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
How Wonderful and Magnificent is Your Most Holy Name!
For You Alone Are Worthy,

In the 1960 Disney movie "Pollyanna", the title character played by child actress Hayley Mills cringes in a pew as the preacher thunders an imprecatory Psalm. She goes home and checks her own Bible, and finds out that there are MORE songs of Praise and Joy than there are Psalms of vengeance. Being a real "Pollyanna", she reports this fact back to the preacher! (I am just pulling this out of my deep memory vault so I may be off a bit!). Pollyanna was, in fact, acting like the Early-Church Bereans, who listened politely to what Paul had to say, but then went home and checked the Scriptures to verify Paul's proclamations. There is nothing wrong with doing that. In fact, the Book of Acts considered it a "Noble" thing to do.

As part of "Moby Dick Day" at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the famous Sermon from Moby Dick is thundered from the ship-shaped pulpit of the Whalers Chapel across the street. I've actually sat in a pew, sung the mournful dirge, and listened to the sermon. Orsen Wells, and, later, Gregory Peck intoned Melville's Sermon in two Movie versions of the book. The text is from the Book of Jonah, which places water in a most unflattering light. Jonah's prayer in the belly of the whale is a Psalm all by itself. (We WILL get to that eventually!)

But today, I'm not Ishmael. Today's Psalm 65 is a celebration of the Beauty of the Earth, the Waters, the Seasons, and ALL of God's Magnificent Creation.

Call me Pollyanna.
