A Lament Over Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Son of man, take up a lament concerning Tyre. 3Say to Tyre, situated at the gateway to the sea, merchant of peoples on many coasts, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“ ‘You say, Tyre,
“I am perfect in beauty.”
4Your domain was on the high seas;
your builders brought your beauty to perfection.
5They made all your timbers
of juniper from Senir a ;
they took a cedar from Lebanon
to make a mast for you.
6Of oaks from Bashan
they made your oars;
of cypress wood b from the coasts of Cyprus
they made your deck, adorned with ivory.
7Fine embroidered linen from Egypt was your sail
and served as your banner;
your awnings were of blue and purple
from the coasts of Elishah.
8Men of Sidon and Arvad were your oarsmen;
your skilled men, Tyre, were aboard as your sailors.
9Veteran craftsmen of Byblos were on board
as shipwrights to caulk your seams.
All the ships of the sea and their sailors
came alongside to trade for your wares.

Heavenly Father,

One of my favorite rides was from North Broward County (where I lived) to Key West, a distance of over 240 miles. One could either take the Highway to Florida City, or the back way through Everglades and Farmland, but once you get to Florida City, the only way you can get onto the Keys is by way of a narrow, twenty mile Causeway that connects the Mainland to the Islands. There are other bridges and causeways ahead, but this one is the longest, and, in some ways, the scariest. While the other causeways go over open water, the one from Florida City to Key Largo goes through swamps, mangroves, and reedy, unstable, untamed, Everglades. There are no off-ramps or shoulders for twenty miles. There are, however, regularly posted signs that say:

CAUTION:
CROCODILES CROSSING.

Not "Alligators". Crocodiles.

While one may feel safe from crocodiles in a car, a motorcycle is another story. The reason there are crocs in that area is because they love the brackish water and shelter of the mangroves. I would always breathe a sigh of relief upon entering Key Largo and leaving the crocs behind.

The City of Tyre in Lebanon was also an Island at the end of a long Causeway. Due to its sheltered harbor and awesome location on the eastern Mediterranean, it was a thriving seaport and a world-renowned trade center.

It's advantages also were liabilities. Tyre was very vulnerable to attack by sea, and it would be easy to besiege them from the land just by cutting off the Causeway.

History is replete with conflicts and conquering when it comes to Tyre. Everyone from Alexander, to the Crusades, to Napoleon, had their moment. At this point in time, Tyre is not an important city at all, and fisherman dry their nets on the stones that were once the great Causeway that was the envy of the world.
