[Catholic Caucus] Cardinal Müller to German bishops: Same-sex ‘blessings’ are ‘diametrically opposed’ to will of God

Cardinal Müller said that Christians naturally understand that lifestyles contrary to Christian ethics 'are not blessed by God.'

Cardinal Gerhard Müller said that same-sex “blessings” are “a deception” and are “diametrically opposed” to the will of God.

In an article published in the German Catholic newspaper Die Tagespost, Cardinal Müller reiterated his critique of so-called same-sex “blessings” in response to two German bishops implementing the heterodox practice in their dioceses.

“When the Pharisees asked Him the trick question of whether divorce and remarriage were compatible with the revealed word of God, Jesus answered with the authority of the Son of the Father: ‘Have you not read that the Creator made them male and female in the beginning?’ (Mt 19:4),” Cardinal Müller wrote in the beginning of his essay.

“So when two people bind themselves to one another as husband and wife, they are no longer two, but “one flesh,” a community of life, body, and love,” the former head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith stated.

“It follows that marriage consists only of the union of a man and a woman.”

“Any form of divorce and even more so marriage substitutes such as sexual relations between people of the same sex are diametrically opposed to the will of the Creator,” he continued.

Cardinal Müller said that Christians naturally understand that lifestyles contrary to Christian ethics “are not blessed by God.”

“Therefore, the church blessing ritual (as a request for helping grace) to legitimize irregular living conditions is both ineffective before God and a ‘pious’ deception toward those involved; comparable to the sale of indulgences for the punishment of sins in exchange for money, which endangered the eternal salvation of both the deceivers and the deceived and brought about the division of Christianity that continues to this day.”

“Those who know God’s order of salvation and justice and nevertheless act against it deserve death of the soul, that is, separation from communion with God, says the Apostle Paul,” Cardinal Müller warned in apparent reference to the German bishops who implemented same-sex “blessings.”

“Those who do not acknowledge God are subject to “depraved thinking” (Romans 1:28),” he noted. “Contrary to the biblical testimony, proponents of a supposed reform of the ‘synodal’ church invoke scientific findings in psychology and sociology (but in blatant contradiction to biology) and, in pastoral theology, a Jesus who both proclaims and suspends the will of God because he is appalled by its consequences for weak human beings.”

He said that the thinking behind the introduction of these “blessings” is “a compromise with the atheistic view of humanity” and “philosophical materialism” introduced by the so-called Enlightenment.

“No longer is the distinction between good and evil the standard of moral action, but rather pleasure and displeasure determine human happiness and comfort without any reference to God, our Creator and Redeemer,” the German Cardinal explained.

“Some bishops in Germany and elsewhere should remember that at their ordination, in which Christ made them successors of the apostles, they promised fidelity to the whole Catholic faith.”

Pope Francis and Fiducia Supplicans to blame

“The text ‘Fiducia supplicans,’ which is confusing in itself, not only contradicts the previous texts of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, but has also provoked strong opposition in large parts of the Catholic and Orthodox episcopate,” Cardinal Müller said.

“It is an opinion incompatible with Catholic theology that it is part of the Pope’s authority to override the clear teaching of Sacred Scripture, apostolic tradition, and the definitive doctrinal decisions of the Magisterium,” he stressed.

Cardinal Müller cited the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution Dei Verbum to show that the Pope is not above the Word of God:

This teaching office is not above the word of God, but serves it, teaching only what has been handed on, listening to it devoutly, guarding it scrupulously and explaining it faithfully in accord with a divine commission and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it draws from this one deposit of faith everything which it presents for belief as divinely revealed. (Dei verbum, No. 10)

When the heretical German bishops published their official guidelines for “blessings” of homosexual “couples,” the divorced and civilly “remarried,” and other irregular unions, they cited Fiducia Supplicans and “the pastoral approach of the pontificate of Pope Francis” as justification for their actions.
