The latest internet debacle is over a new set of rules that Carnival Cruise Lines has put in place to cut back on unruly behavior by some of its passengers. One of the rules involves banning of Japanese-Style Folding Fans. How can a little bamboo and paper fan be an incentive to unruly behavior? The Cruise Line has been accused of being "racist" for banning these fans. "What?" Fans are violent and banning them is racist? What am I missing here?

In 1885, a Comic Opera called "The Mikado" became a sensation. William S. Gilbert got the idea for the Libretto after he visited a Japanese Exposition in London. He was particularly interested in the proper deployment of the Hand Fans, and hired authentic Japanese instructors to coach his British cast. The rapid but elegant movements, opening and closing the fans, became a very important feature of any Production of The Mikado. Even amateur productions employ the Fan "Business".

What does this have to do with Carnival Cruise Lines?

One of the latest Line Dances is called "Boots on the Ground". It has a really fun groove, and I love to play the Bass with it. It does, however, involve hand fans, with a lot of snapping and popping, pointing and gesturing. In the confines of a Cruise Ship Dance Floor, this has led to "unwelcome contact". If the crowd has already had too much to drink, getting poked in the eye with a fan can lead to fights and rioting. And that's exactly what's been happening.

Unfortunately, there are people who see racism in everything, and banning hand fans and a certain line dance is causing controversy.

During World War 2, "The Mikado" was banned in Boston, as was "Madame Butterfly". So "Political Correctness" is nothing new. There were even activists who wanted "The Mikado" banned a few years ago, because they said it offended Asian People. In Reality, it didn't mock Asians, it mocked 19th Century Britain. They just did it while snapping and popping their fans.

"Modern" Bible Scholars don't like Joshua very much. The dashing, handsome Joshua portrayed by John Derek in "The Ten Commandments" is a far cry from the real Joshua, who was nearly 80 years old upon entering the Promised Land. He was ordered by God to conquer the Land, and be "Strong and Courageous". He was told to wipe out whole cities.

Some might say this is "racist".

When we look at the world in a narrow focus, like a Cruise Ship Dance Floor, or a Concert Stage, or even a sliver of History, it's easy to apply our own current values to the situation and expect long-dead historical figures to adhere to them. When the past doesn't line up with our current values we call Historical figures "racist", or "sexist", or "imperialist", or whatever.

There's even a word for that. It's called "Presentism". There's a word for everything, I guess.

In Today's passage, Joshua is given the Borders of the Promised Land, and once again, it is marked by Bodies of Water.

God is telling Joshua to be Strong and Courageous, and get those "Boots on the Ground".
