Two years ago, my brother gave me a "Trickle Charger" for Christmas. This is a device that keeps your Auto or Motorcycle battery maintained and charged, especially if the vehicle is going to be stored for a length of time. For a dead battery to be completely recharged, the device needs to be hooked up, undisturbed, for around ten hours.

If you have been reading these stories every day, you know that my motorcycle is sitting in front of my house waiting to go to the shop for a new Voltage Regulator. The Voltage Regulator serves the same function as the Alternator on your car, recharging the battery as you ride. When the Voltage Regulator stops doing its job, the battery runs out. I need enough battery to get me to the shop, which is six miles away.

"Aha!" I thought. "I'll just use the Trickle Charger Ed gave me for Christmas! I'll hook it up to a nice LONG extension cord and leave it on all day. That will give me enough juice to get to the shop." (I also speculated that, since the shop is at the bottom of a hill, if the battery dies, I can just ROLL down it.) So I began the process.

First, I got the long extension cord that I use for my weed-whacker, and plugged it securely into the outdoor outlet on the side of my house. Then I walked the cord to where my bike was parked. Good! It just made it! Then I had to remove the seat. The 32-year-old Phillips screw yielded to my touch this time...no problem. SAVE THAT SCREW! It's probably some weird size that can't be obtained anymore.

Since the directions that came with the Trickle Charger were in Chinese, I searched my brain for the sequence of events that followed.

OK. RED is Positive, and Black is Negative. Clamp the red one to the + terminal, and the Black one to the - terminal. Now, get AWAY from the Bike, and plug the Trickle Charger into the extension cord. If the green light on the unit is blinking, the battery is charging. If it's steady, it's charged. WOO HOO! It was blinking. It was hard to see in the bright sunshine, but there it was.

I was sweating like a pig at this point, and realized that the sun was beating down on the array of Bike, Charger, and Electrical Cables in front of my house. That would not be good. I got out a beach umbrella and proceeded to lash it to the bike with Bungee Cords. There! Now that needs to go for ten hours. (It was 11:00AM, so I'd check it through the day.)

Then my sister called and wanted to do lunch and some errands. Cool! I needed to get out and into an air-conditioned store. So we went. Before I left, I adjusted the beach Umbrella, because the sun had moved a bit.

After a nice lunch in an air-conditioned restaurant, we rode in Sis's air-condtioned car to the air-conditioned store where she bought the items she needed. Then we went home. I went over to check the Trickle Charger, which was still blinking. It would require a few more hours to get enough juice to start the bike and ride the six miles. I adjusted the umbrella again, because the sun had moved, exposing both the interior of my bike and the Trickle Charger to the sunlight. My Goodness, it was hot out there! I'd better get inside into the A/C before I pass out!

Tippy was annoyed that I had gone out without her, so I took her for a walk. She must have been channeling her Inner Dingo, as she didn't seem to be perturbed by the Outback-Like Heat that was bearing down on us as we trotted to the mailbox. I couldn't wait to get back into the A/C. I went in so fast that I neglected to notice that the sun had moved again.

I don't know what it is about the heat bothering me so much. It never seemed to bother me in Florida. perhaps because Florida has Tradewinds and Palm Trees, not to mention whole trees full of orchids, that the heat there seems appropriate. In New England, it's just oppressive. Anyway, back into the A/C for a little rest. I put some Bach CDs on the stereo and settled into the recliner.

About halfway into Cantata 140 (my favorite), Tippy leaped into my lap and started barking into my face. She wanted to go out again. Grrrrr.

When we went outside, I saw that the Bike and the Charger were fully exposed to the sunlight. The green light was still blinking, which meant that the battery wasn't charged fully, not even after six hours. But there was something else going on. The plastic housing of the Trickle Charger was melting!

I ran over to the side of the house and disconnected the extension cord. Then I followed the cord back to the bike and unplugged the Charger. Finally, perfectly reversing the order of installation, I removed the clamps from the terminals on the battery. EVERYTHING was hot to the touch.

I suppose the Charger has now been compromised and is no longer safe to use. I WILL need a "Jump" to get to the shop. No way around it.

I went online to get another Charger, and it froze up my computer. I was on the phone with my sister when THAT happened, and I became cantankerous on the phone with her. (I'm Sorry!) I'll go to a real "Brick and Mortar" Auto Parts store and buy another one, but that's not going to help me right now. I put the seat back on the Bike, Covered it up, and went indoors again. By now, I needed a shower.

Then it happened. It RAINED. Oh did it rain. I can't even imagine what would have happened if the rain had hit while the Battery was charging.

It's Always Something.

I would never buy an Electrical Item from China on my own, and therefore do without a lot. Coffee makers, toaster ovens, battery Chargers, etc.

My entire Stereo was MADE IN THE USA.

Andover, MA, in fact.

Both my Coffee maker and Toaster Oven I bought second-hand, so at least MY money didn’t go to China.

It’s nearly an impossible commitment to make, as everything seems to be made in China. Grrrrrr
