Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
Numbers 21:16-20

16 From there they continued on to Beer, the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together and I will give them water.”

17 Then Israel sang this song:

“Spring up, O well!
    Sing about it,
18  about the well that the princes dug,
    that the nobles of the people sank—
    the nobles with scepters and staffs.”

Then they went from the wilderness to Mattanah, 19 from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah overlooks the wasteland.

During the Korean War, my Dad reenlisted in the Navy to serve his Country once again (He had just gotten home from WW2, and had been in several famous battles in the South Pacific). Mom was appalled that he had reenlisted, because they were engaged to be married soon.

As soon as the Navy found out that Dad was a Photographer and Movie Buff, and that he knew how to operate Professional Cameras and Projectors, they sent him to the most remote part of North America, where certain islands were only twenty miles away from the Soviet Union. His job was to keep the Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines who were stationed there alert, entertained, and READY, in case Stalin decided to invade North America via that route. (I imagine the Aleutians can get pretty boring and depressing!) Dad served there long enough to add many Tales of the NORTH Pacific to his Tales of the South Pacific, which he shared eventually with his ever-growing family.

His skills weren't wasted. Long before there were VCRs, or Netflix, or even Movies on TV, Dad had a screen mounted in the Living Room and showed movies. These were REAL Movies, from Hollywood, not just B Movies" or "Shorts". Movies like "The Great Race", "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World", "Spartacus", "2001 A Space Odyssey" came in large cans with the Movie name scrawled in black and the cans numbered in sequence. They were 16mm, and Dad had two projectors set up in sequence on the Dining Room Table. Why two? This was so that Dad could seamlessly change the reels during the movie. Some "Epic" took 3-4 reels, but we never knew the when the changes took place.

While Dad loved Epics and War Movies, he had a love of Musicals as well. Nelson Eddy and Jeannette MacDonald predominated, but we also were treated to Rogers and Hammerstein Classics like "The King and I" and "South Pacific". I loved the Epics and the War Movies, but I was a little perturbed by the Musicals. It's not easy to write a song, yet these characters burst into song at the slightest provocation! Not only that, they sang in harmony with full orchestration! When seen on stage, live, it made sense because the Stage is obvious "Make-Believe". But the Movie Musicals would have a realistic outdoor scene, in the Alps, or on a dock in the South Pacific, and suddenly there would be a song, an orchestra, and maybe even a choreographed dance.

That just doesn't happen in Real Life...or does it? Several times in the Bible, People burst into Song. Adam, upon beholding the newly-created Eve, bursts into song, as do Moses and Miriam after the Red Sea Crossing. Miriam even picks up her tambourine and leads the women in a DANCE. (Right out of a Movie Musical, I'm telling ya!)

Today's Scripture Passage tells of another scene of spontaneous singing. The lyrics of the song are once again preserved in the Bible, for us to read today.

And, like the Red Sea Song, it's about WATER.
