Oh LORD,
You are Forever Holy and Righteous.

For a number of years, my husband and I would have lunch together once a week when my lessons brought me near Deerfield Beach where he worked. This coincided perfectly with an Indian Restaurant near his place of employment. The restaurant had been introduced to Mike by a colleague from Saudi Arabia, who was concerned about the dietary laws of his religion. Even though the Owners of the Restaurant were Hindu, they purchased Hallal meat, and clearly stated it on their menu.

Mike had been raised in a Kosher Home, so he understood his colleague's concerns. It became the only place his friend would eat lunch. That was OK by me, because the Indian Buffet was WONDERFUL, so much variety...hot dishes, cold dishes, spicy dishes, mild dishes, meat curries, fish dishes, vegetarian curries, all clearly labeled. I was very sad when it closed.

Then, I found an Israeli Restaurant! It was Kosher, and added the prohibition against mixing milk with meat to it's long list of prohibited meats and shellfish.

Even with the restrictions, this place was amazing. Middle Eastern Delicacies mingled with good-old-fashioned Eastern European flavors made this spot a "Must" whenever I was teaching in the Boca Raton area. What amazed me was the number of strictly veiled Muslim women who came here to eat. Evidently, they believed that if it was "Kosher", it was also "Hallal".

(For the record, I'll try anything at least once).

Iran is in the NEWS right now, and the "troubles" with them can be traced back to 1979 when the government was seized by a strict Muslim sect, led by Ayatollah Khomeini. As well as taking 52 American Hostages and holding them for 444 days, the ayatollah enforced the strictest most oppressive interpretation of his religion onto the people of Iran. One of these was to declare Caviar as "Haram" (FORBIDDEN). The only problem was that Caviar was an important export of Iran, obtained from the Surgeon Fish. Since the sturgeon is like a catfish, a bottom feeder without scales, the Ayatollah declared it "Unclean".

The wealthy elites roared their disapproval at the loss of their precious Beluga Caviar from Iran. That, combined with a difficult economy, caused the Ayatollah to consult his own friendly scientists to find some scales on that critter, pronto. The scientists happily obliged, stating that the sturgeon USED to have scales, but not so much anymore. That was enough to reverse the Fatwa.

The division between Clean and Unclean foods is outlined in Deuteronomy 14. It's straightforward and simple. By limiting meats to animals that have a split hoof and chew the cud, scavengers and predators are avoided. The same thing goes for fish. If it has fins and scales, it swims through the water and is less likely to be a "Bottom Feeder". This also rules out shellfish, crustaceans, and snakes. One can have a very nice diet without including those foods, but, in the New Testament, we see a number of instances where all foods are declared "clean". Jesus says that "nothing that goes INTO your mouth is unclean, but what comes OUT of your mouth can be. (Matthew 15:18-19). In the Book of Acts, Peter has a dream about Clean and Unclean foods, and is an analogy about Jews and Gentiles (Acts 10). Finally, in Paul's letter to the Corinthians, he speaks of "meat that has been sacrificed to idols", and how it won't hurt you. He also adds a caveat that, if you KNOW that eating such things will cause somebody else to stumble, it's best to avoid eating out of concern for your brother in Christ.

I guess it would have been mean of me to tell Mike's Saudi friend that a bit of the Hallal Curry he was enjoying had been sacrificed to a little shrine of Ganesha in the back of the restaurant. So...I kept my mouth shut.

Sometimes, that's the wise thing to do.
