Almighty and Eternal Father,
How Glorious and Wonderful You Are!
Your Magnificence and Perfection are Overwhelming.
And yet, even more-so, Your Justice,
Your Righteousness,

Let all that has been Concealed

A fun (and cheap) date night consisted of going to a particular strip mall on State Road 7 that had a Chinese Buffet, a BBQ Restaurant, and a BLOCKBUSTER Video store. Both restaurants offered abundant food at low prices, and we alternated between the two. After dinner, we would walk over to the BLOCKBUSTER and wander the aisles for over an hour, picking out several movies. Then, we would walk back to the bikes and ride around a bit before we went home, made up a tub of popcorn, and had Movie Night. Because of the huge size of the BLOCKBUSTER Store, we often had movies that we hadn't even known existed. Did you know that there are several different movies entitled "The Ten Commandments"? Well, there are, and one of them is a MUSICAL with Val Kilmer as Moses. ("The Prince of Egypt" also features Val Kilmer in this role.)

While the Charleton Heston Version remains my favorite, there was a boxed set that I rented of the TV Miniseries "The Ten Commandments", which carried a Warning Label. The label stated that one had to be over 18 years of age in order to rent the video. How weird! It had been on Broadcast Television, so how could it have been "R-Rated"? It was so strange having to produce my Driver's License to Rent a Video of a TV Show, and the first couple of hours of the video series didn't have anything that could have caused this. It must have been a mistake.

Then, near the very end, came the scene that Moses describes in Today's Bible Passage.

Moses had just spent 40 Days up on Mt. Sinai, receiving The Ten Commandments directly from God. Meanwhile, back on the ground, the people had forced Aaron to make a Golden Calf, which they then worshiped with a bacchanal of epic proportions. (For some reason, if it's Ancient People cavorting in this manner, it bypasses the Censors!)

But what came afterward was even more deserving of the "R-Rating".

Moses, in his fury, smashes the Tablets of The Ten Commandments to the ground. He orders his followers to massacre the people who worshiped the Golden Calf, destroy the idol, grind it to a powder and toss the ashes into a nearby stream. Then he forces the idolaters to drink the polluted water.

The Violence of the scene was more graphic than the orgy preceding it

Commentators wrangle about the meaning of this. Some argue that the People didn't know any better, because The Ten Commandments hadn't been carved into stone just yet. However, a chronological reading of the Book of Exodus shows that the Ten Commandments were given verbally by God to the Assembly before Moses went up the Mountain.

The idol was destroyed so it couldn't be repaired, but we know from further reading that Golden Calves were reintroduced in the promised land many years later. It was "the thing that wouldn't die", unfortunately.

Something occurred to me for the first time when I read today's Passage in the context of our study of "Water, Streams, and Rivers in the Bible".

The burning and grinding up of a sinful thing, represented by an young cow, and then putting the ashes in water, reminded me of the Red Heifer Ceremony which produced the "Water of Cleansing". I have no idea if this is my own imagination or if there is a connection there, but I thought it was interesting. Do you think they may be connected?
