Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
Deuteronomy 11:16-21

16 Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. 17 Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and he will shut up the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you. 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

Oh LORD,
Our God!
Sanctified and Holy is Your Most Hallowed Name.
How Excellent,

How Wonderful,
How Perfect You Are!
My Heart is Overwhelmed With Your Glory,
Your Magnificence,

When I think of how Awesome You Are,

From 1961 to 1970, my Dad rented a seven-room log cabin on a pond in Southeastern Massachusetts. The cabin was accessible only by a dirt road that was as hilly as a roller coaster, which ended at the cabin's driveway. For five weeks every summer, we six kids lived in "The Cottage" swimming, canoe paddling, and sailing on the lake. It was like a little slice of heaven.

It was close enough to The City of Boston that Dad could go to work every day (he only got two weeks vacation), and Mom loved the place, even though she still did all the things moms have to do: cooking, cleaning, laundry, watching kids, etc. Somehow, at the Cottage these things weren't too onerous.

As an Art Student, I worked for days in the hot sun doing an Oil Painting of "the Cottage" which Mom had on her wall till the day she died.

We all had wonderful memories of the Cottage, and were sorry to hear that it had been sold recently. My sisters and I were greatly annoyed that we hadn't known it was for sale, otherwise we would have pooled our resources and bought it.

Just last week, my youngest sister and I were driving around the South Shore, when my car "found its way" to the Cottage. When we got to the end of the dirt road we saw that the only place I could use to turn the car around was blocked by a huge pile of dirt. My sister got out of the car and walked around the pile. I used the time she was gone to do a nine-point turn to get the car going into the opposite direction.

My sister came back to the car in tears.

"It's GONE! she exclaimed. "It's been totally torn down!"

The new owner had been there, and after my sister told him that this had been her childhood Paradise, he explained that the building had been so infested by termites that it was unsalvageable. The only solution was to completely raze it, decontaminate, and build a new house from scratch. We drove home in silence. A huge chunk of our childhood and adolescence had been obliterated. It was a solid moment of Reality, and carried the weight of our own Mortality.

But...I still have the painting.

Moses knows that he won't be going to The Promised Land. He had led the people for forty years, and had written everything out for them, but somehow, he knew Human Nature. Like the termites that ate the Cottage, sin would gnaw away at the People and eventually corrupt them. Moses could see it already happening. (When I told my Brother Ed about the termites, he replied that termites had been a problem at the Cottage 60 YEARS ago, when he was a kid, helping the elderly landlord maintain the property. So, they've always been there, just waiting for the vigilance to stop.)

What would be the sign of God's favor? Rain and abundance. What was the result of Sin? Drought and Decay.

Buildings come and go, but some things remain Forever.

Like the Oil Painting on the wall of my Entry Room, The Word of God has survived the termites and serves to remind us of Paradise.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
