Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
Numbers 33:3-14

3 The Israelites set out from Rameses on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover. They marched out defiantly in full view of all the Egyptians, 4 who were burying all their firstborn, whom the Lord had struck down among them; for the Lord had brought judgment on their gods.

5 The Israelites left Rameses and camped at Sukkoth.

6 They left Sukkoth and camped at Etham, on the edge of the desert.

7 They left Etham, turned back to Pi Hahiroth, to the east of Baal Zephon, and camped near Migdol.

8 They left Pi Hahiroth[a] and passed through the sea into the desert, and when they had traveled for three days in the Desert of Etham, they camped at Marah.

9 They left Marah and went to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there.

10 They left Elim and camped by the Red Sea.[b]

11 They left the Red Sea and camped in the Desert of Sin.

12 They left the Desert of Sin and camped at Dophkah.

13 They left Dophkah and camped at Alush.

14 They left Alush and camped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink.

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name Over All The Earth!

Apologies for two threads in one day, but I have an early appointment tomorrow, so I'm doing Tomorrow's Thread Tonight.

When I went to Israel in 1984, we had a very strict two-week itinerary. We had places on our tour which were quite far away, and in areas which are now not usually included in tours. A trip to Hebron, for example, had to be cleared with the Israeli Authorities, based on the daily situation, and our crossing into Lebanon was canceled at the last minute do to some violence at the border. Our trip to Masada was complicated by the fact that the Cable Car to the summit had broken down, so we climbed the Roman Ramp (still accessible after 2000 years!). That made us late for our trip to Qumran, and it was pitch dark by the time we got there. The ruins weren't lit up, so we just sat around a campfire, someone handed me a guitar, and we sang songs and ate a box lunch. Then we all got back on the bus and rode back to Jerusalem. No matter how carefully the Itinerary had been planned, there were little things that intervened and caused delays and detours. It didn't matter, because we were having such a great time anyway.

The Journey from Egypt to Canaan shouldn't have taken very long at all. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had all been to Egypt and back again, and the story of Joseph has the Sons of Israel shuttling back and forth several times. There's no way it should have taken forty years.

However, the People had been slaves in Egypt for over 400 years, and generations had been born, lived, and died under the yoke of bondage. Their number one emotion was FEAR: Fear of Hunger, Fear of Thirst, Fear of Dying in the Desert, and Fear of being Lost. This Fear was expressed by Worrying, Complaining, and the desire to go back into Bondage. There was a false security in slavery, and the Israelites soon learned that, along with Freedom come Responsibility. They had to Trust in God for all their sustenance, and the whole generation that had been enslaved wasn't ready for that.

Ronald Reagan once said:

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

Being Free can sometimes be Hard Work. Other times it might just be a matter of Trust in God.

I made the Pilgrimage to Jerusalem about 10 years later than you Did without any trips out of the Old City. Tens days with ten Rolls of 35 mm film. The Airfare was covered by Frequent Flyers miles and I booked 3 days at the Seven Arches Hotel atop the Mt. Of Olives. Having my camera,
Pilgrims Guide and Bible I wandered as Lead. Walking thru the Kidron Valley became a task even with passing by the
Garden of Gethsemane so I moved to the Pilgrams Palace Hotel. This put me next to the Garden Tomb which became my Favorite Spot to relax from the Hustle of the Ancient City. Exploring was never disappointing as you turned a corner your shoes were on a Roman Road and Then Arches or some obscure rough Wall. Schindlers’grave was a Solemn visit With the Upper Room just a few Yards away. Had a Whopper at Burger King and was Admonished at the
Waleing Wall for using an ink pen by a Priest with a Tall round Fur Hat !
Yes I Felt at Home but Knew I would not Return to this Place this side of the...
