Reward for Obedience

26 “‘Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.

2 “‘Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the Lord.

3 “‘If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, 4 I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. 5 Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land.

Our God

It was bright and sunny the morning my husband and I packed up the bikes and set out for Orlando, FL. It was 3.5 hours away if you took the Florida Turnpike. However, the tolls had gone up to $13.00 per Bike, which I thought was outrageous. We opted to take I95 North to the "Bee Line", and head straight West through 50 miles of flat farmland till we got to our accommodations in Kissimmee. It was a few more miles than the Turnpike, but there were no tolls involved.

About fifty miles into the journey, near Delray Beach, we hit construction on I95. Traffic slowed down to a crawl, and stayed that way till we got the West Palm Beach. Then, after the Town of Jupiter, it was smooth riding again. We had an expression that Anything South of Jupiter is a Whole Other Planet."

The highway opened up for us and we breezed past Vero Beach, Ft. Pierce, and Marathon. Just as we approached the "Bee Line", it started to rain. We pulled over and donned our rain gear. We're not afraid of a little rain!

Back on the road, we went onto the ramp to the "Bee Line", knowing that from here it was a straight shot to Orlando, with no turns, ramps, overpasses, or rest stops to interrupt our journey. By now, though, the rain had turned into a deluge. With zero visibility, and no place to shelter, Mike and I lumbered along the "Bee Line" with our emergency blinkers on. We reasoned that, if we couldn't see anything, neither could the Truckers, of whom there were many. (This is a Farming Road). Every time an Eighteen-Wheeler sped past us, it sent up huge Tsunamis of filthy road water, drenching us in grease and mud. When we finally arrived at our hotel, we squished through the lobby, dragging our soaked luggage, and leaving a trail of mud across the floor.

The Concierge, surrounded by pamphlets advertising Disney, Universal, Wet'n'Wild Waterpark, Medieval Times, and Arabian Nights Dinner Show, looked at us in shock. When she recovered her composure she asked:

"Uh...May I help you?"

Mike replied:

"Yeah. I need two tickets to Wet'n'Wild, Please."

The whole lobby erupted in laughter.

After we checked into our room, we literally poured water out of our laptop and cell phones. It was as if we had been thrown into a pool with all our gear.

When it rains like that, it's easy to get disgruntled and cranky about it. But the "Sunshine State" wouldn't be beautiful without its abundant Tropical Rains. The very name of the State is from the Spanish word for "Flowers". The Flowers of Florida are so abundant and glorious that they defy description. Whole trees of Orchids, Jacaranda, Frangipani, and other Tropical Flowers fill the air with their color and fragrance. Without the abundant rains, Florida would just be a flat coral ridge surrounding a swamp full of alligators.

My own little garden contained mangoes, avocados, two kinds of bananas, and even coffee. (Never got a single coffee bean, but the flowers were really nice). My New England Garden has a lot of flowers too, but mostly herbs and bulbs that need to "winter" each year.

Even the herbs and bulbs need rain to grow. If we have a dry Spring, I'm out there with the watering can trying to coax those few plants into renewal but it's not easy.

In Today's Scripture, we see the Rain as a Blessing for heeding and obeying God's Word. In the Middle East, one can go months without rain, and when it does come, people dance in the streets like Gene Kelly in "Singing in the Rain"

When the rain stops coming, it's a disaster for everybody.
