Exodus 23:20-33

God’s Angel to Prepare the Way

20 “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. 22 If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. 23 My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. 24 Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred stones to pieces. 25 Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, 26 and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span.

27 “I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run. 28 I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. 29 But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. 30 Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land.

31 “I will establish your borders from the Red Sea[a] to the Mediterranean Sea,[b] and from the desert to the Euphrates River. I will give into your hands the people who live in the land, and you will drive them out before you. 32 Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods. 33 Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you.”

My brother bought an old farmhouse that was surrounded by fallow farmland and secondary woods, and bordered onto a river. The property was described as going right to the River's Edge, and therefore had what are called "Littoral Rights". That meant that the river was his border, but he had the use of his land right up to the water, and could launch a canoe if he wanted to.

When Developers purchased the land on either side of my friend and built "McMansions" on them, the Environmentalists insisted that these palatial homes did not have Littoral Rights. Their manicured lawns stopped abruptly at the tangled woods on the rivers edge, with very "official" signs forbidding access to the River. The older properties were ignored by the Powers-that-Be, because they probably do not want another King Philip's War in the Community. Wars are very bad for Tourism, and I doubt if the Commonwealth of Massachusetts wants a replay of one of the deadliest battles between the Colonists and the Northeastern Tribes. This devastating war was the result of property disputes, Land and Water.

Real Estate Laws differ from State to State and from Country to Country, but certain things are constant. Whether it is a Purchase and Sale Agreement, a Land Grant, or a Deed, there is always a Description of the Property involved. In the Bible, we have a number of these transactions. They all have certain elements that are common, and chief among them is a term we still use today:"Description of Property".

When Abraham purchased the Cave of Machpelah for a Burial Place for Sarah (Genesis 23:1-2), the deal included a "Description of the Property". When David purchased the Threshing Floor of Arunah (2 Samuel 24:18-25), there is a description of the Property. When Jeremiah purchases Property (Jeremiah 32), there is a Description as well. All of these Transactions contain the essentials of a Real Estate Deal:

1. The Buyer
2. The Seller
3. The Purchase Price
and
4. A Description of the Property.

All of these Transactions were Witnessed, and the Deed placed in a safe place. They may not have had a City Hall in those days, but the Transactions were "registered" within the Holy Bible. You can't do better than that!

Even Today, when Deeds are drawn up, bodies of Water are used as Landmarks. In God's Promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and later to Moses, the land is marked by the Mediterranean, The Dead Sea, The Euphrates River, and the "Wadi of Egypt" (the Nile?). Anyway that's a lot bigger than the tiny sliver of Land that Israel clings to today.

Thank you Holy Father, for your consistent protection of Your people!

Loving Lord and Heavenly Father, thank You, that You are always there for me and that You have promised never to leave me not to forsake me. Father, there are an increasing number of evils in the world that can cause our hearts of fear, but I know that You have promised to be with me, to protect and to defend, even to the end of the age.

Place Your hand of protection over me I pray, and cover those that I love with Your peace and grace, comfort and hope. Help me to trust You in all things, and may I never forget that no matter what happens in this life You have promised to be my Protector and Provider, my Rock and my Shield of defence.

Let me sleep soundly tonight I pray, and keep the looming shadows of darkness and fear far from my heart. This I ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
