Exodus 17:1-7

Water From the Rock

17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.”

Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”

3 But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”

4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”

5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah[a] and Meribah[b] because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Wonderful,
How Majestic,
How Excellent is Your Most Holy Name!
Our Hearts overflow with praise and Wonder at Your Glory.
You Alone Are Worthy of Our Love and Adoration,
You Alone Are Worthy Of Worship,
For You Alone Are The Omnipotent,
Eternal and Omniscient,
Everlasting and Almighty God.
Abba Father, We just Love to look at Your Creation.
When We see the latest pictures from Space,
Or examine the intricacies of the DNA Molecule,
The Majesty and Total Awesome Power of Your Creative Genius is made Manifest!
Teach us, Dear Father,
To ALWAYS Worship The CREATOR, not the creation,
To fix our minds upon You, Not upon the Earth.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Today looks like a beautiful day for a Bike Ride. It's sunny, not too warm, and my lesson this afternoon was canceled so I have plenty of time. One of my favorite rides is along the ocean, and I can manage that without riding on any major highways. Highways may be faster and more efficient ways of getting from one place to another, but are boring. I'd much rather ride for miles on curvy country roads.

There were major trade routes between Egypt and Canaan. The Exodus shouldn't have taken more than a few weeks or months, despite the logistics involved with so many people. Yet, right at the start, God chose to have the Israelites take "The Scenic Route", which will test them, train them, and most of all, make them a Nation with a Culture, Government, Religion, and a Written History. Moses ends up with forty years to write the Torah, and, while the First Four Books read like a Narrative and an Instruction Manual, the Fifth Book (Deuteronomy)reads more like Moses' personal journal. I just started Deuteronomy this morning in my own personal reading, as I go through the Torah twice a year (Right on Schedule!).

The "Scenic Route" through Southern Massachusetts takes me through Cranberry Country, a lot of Farmland, and Coastal Towns. It's quite civilized, and there is no shortage of gas stations or cafes for a rest stop. It wasn't that way with the Israelites. They were taking the Scenic Route through a parched wilderness. I suppose it would be like me attempting my Dream Ride on the remnants of Route 66 (see my home page). All the little gas stations and cafes are now, sadly, grafitti-covered ruins. It's a shame, really.

The Israelites were acting like half a million toddlers in car seats whining, "ARE WE THERE YET???? I'M THIRSTY!!!!"

God tells Moses to strike the rock, ONCE. When Moses obeys, water gushes out and stops the complaining...for a while.

Make a note of God's Command to strike the Rock "Once". The Messiah, Who is OUR Rock, would only be stricken Once. He would die Once, and rise from the Dead, never to die again. The next time Moses needs water, God tells him to SPEAK to the Rock. Don't go striking it again.

We'll see later how that turns out.
