🇺🇸Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem 🇮🇱(5/21/25)[Prayer]

Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
Genesis 30:25-43

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland. 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.” 27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you.” 28 He added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”

29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care. 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?”

31 “What shall I give you?” he asked.

“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages. 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen.”

34 “Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.” 35 That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs, and he placed them in the care of his sons. 36 Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.

37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches. 38 Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches, 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob. 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

Even though I owned my car outright, the cost of repairs on it were starting to become as much as a monthly payment. Just a month or two earlier, I had been in Hawaii, where my Best Friend died in my arms in an open-door helicopter over the vent of an erupting volcano (I Am NOT Making This Up). While I was on the Big Island, I had rented a 2013 Silver-Grey Nissan Rogue, and loved it. I wasn't thinking about cars much because of shock and bereavement, but I was able to drive across the island on the Treacherous Saddle Road, alone, after that huge trauma. The car behaved admirably, and I sort of formed a "spiritual" connection with it.

A month later, back in Florida, I decided to trade in the old Pontiac for another car. I checked our local dealership in Coral Springs, where I had purchased two cars already and saw the 2013 Silver-Grey Nissan Rogue, with a mere 17,000 miles on it, listed for $18,000. It was practically Brand New!

I printed out the ad, and clutching it like it was an icon, went to the dealership.

Right off the bat, the Car Dealer tried to intimidate me. He would only give me $1000 for my trade-in, and wanted $19,900 for the Rogue. We haggled back and forth until I demanded to see the manager. Clutching the print-out, I stormed into the manager's office and proclaimed:

"Evidently, Customer Loyalty Means NOTHING At This Dealership!!!!"

The manager immediately sold me the Car for $18,000, gave me $2000 for my Trade-In, and limited the Monthly Payment to $350.00 which was all I could afford.

I still have the Rogue, with 109,000 miles on it and it still runs great. Even better since I got the A/C fixed in time for Summer. It was the exact Year, Make, Model, Color, and Mileage as the car I drove the Fifty Mile Saddle Road after the Death of my Friend. (There is SO much more to that story, but that's an ironic part of it).

Jacob had fled to his kinsman Laban because he had tricked his elder brother and elderly father. He stayed with Laban over twenty years, and, as for finagling, had met his match. Laban had tricked Jacob into marrying the wrong daughter, and kept changing Jacob's wages and agreements. Jacob was getting a dose of his own medicine. But Jacob had a "secret weapon". because he had bargained his brother's Birthright, he was now the Heir of the Promise given to Abraham. I doubt if it was on a piece of paper, but it was certainly on Jacob's mind for twenty years. Then The Lord told him "It's Time To Go Home."

Jacob approached Laban for his twenty years back pay, and, once again, Laban balked about it. They finally came to an agreement that all the less valuable spotted or streaked animals would be Jacob's wages.

Both Laban and Jacob went into high gear. Laban's sons stole as many spotted sheep as they could and hid them away among Laban's flocks.

Jacob, on the other hand, applied some unconventional "Animal Husbandry", by placing spotted sticks near the strongest sheep when they were mating. He also was careful to include spotted animals, crossbreeding them with the heartiest members of the flock. The spotted sticks were just an extra little votive thing that he employed, but the real reason for his prospering flock were the Laws of Heredity, discovered hundreds of years later. Jacob combined his own superstitions with God's Magnificent DNA Molecule. Since the Law had not yet been given to Moses, Jacob seems to have been forgiven this little foray into "magic".

What does this have to do with Water? Jacob knew that his flock was most comfortable next to a stream. It was there that they mated, and it was beside a stream where Jacob conducted his "business".

Like me clutching my printout, Jacob was the very definition of a "Rogue".

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 146

1 Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God all my life long.

3 Do not put your trust in princes,
in mortals, in whom there is no help.
4 When their breath departs, they return to the earth;
on that very day their plans perish.

5 Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God,
6 who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them;
who keeps faith for ever;
7 who executes justice for the oppressed;
who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;
8 the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
the Lord loves the righteous.
9 The Lord watches over the strangers;
he upholds the orphan and the widow,
but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 The Lord will reign for ever,
your God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise the Lord!
