Genesis 21:8-21

Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

8 The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”

11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring[b] will be reckoned. 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.”

14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.

15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she[c] began to sob.

17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”

19 Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

20 God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
How Blessed,
How Glorious,
How Wonderful,
Is Your Most Holy Name!
How Mighty and Perfect is Your Word,
And Your Promise,
Which You have allowed us a glimpse into Your Perfect Will!
You, The Eternal,
The Omnipotent,
The Immortal,
Not Bound By Time or Space,
because You Created it,
Your Ways are not our ways,
And yet we hunger and thirst for You,
like a thirsty little deer panting in the forest,
seeking a bubbling spring for a fresh sip of water!

Let all that has been Concealed

We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Bible Scholars have struggled with these passages for centuries. It seems that Sarah is being unimaginably cruel to Hagar and Ishmael. After all, what teenage boy hasn't teased his little brother? Yet, whatever Ishmael did to Isaac seemed so outrageous, that Sarah had them permanently excluded from the family.

A lot of this may have had to do with Sarah's own feelings of guilt. After all, it was she who had convinced her husband to sleep with the servant girl, in order to hurry along God's Promise of a son. This backfired spectacularly on Sarah when Hagar immediately became pregnant. Combined with Sarah's feelings of inadequacy during the years when Hagar's son grew up, and still no baby for Sarah, combined with Hagar's attitude of superiority, the emotions exploded when Sarah saw Ishmael (now a young teenager) "laughing" at his baby brother.

It's the word "laughing" that causes the controversy. Some translations render this word as "Mocking", "Making fun of", "Making Sport of", or "Playing with". Some of the more pious scholars, who can't imaging Sarah being so cruel, speculate that Ishmael was being physically abusive with his little brother, which certainly would have been grounds for dismissal. Others put the blame solely on Sarah, saying she overreacted, especially since the whole thing started when she "laughed" at God's Promise of a Son in her Old Age. We'll never know until ALL our questions are answered. The fact remains that the Hebrew Word is just the one for "Laughter", and is also the root word of Isaac's name, and the word used to describe Sarah's own laughter: צְחַק (Tsachaq) Strong's 6711

In any case, God uses WATER to save the lives of the Outcasts.
