Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
Genesis 13:10-12

5 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. 7 And quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.

8 So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”

10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.

Abba, Father,
How Wonderful You Are!
And LORD,
Our God,

For Your Holy Word,

All the Great Cities of Ancient Civilizations had access to Water. Either they were Seaports, Lakeside, or at a confluence of Rivers. The Entire Fertile Crescent was nestled between two Rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates, and Egypt relied upon the Nile flooding and receding every year. Vast tracts of land without a ready supply of water were useless for building cities. While they were OK for grazing cattle and a nomadic lifestyle, those who chose this life were constantly on the move, always in search of water for their flocks and themselves.

Wealth was measured in the size of the flocks and herds, and, evidently, Abraham and Lot were quite wealthy. Soon, the land could no longer support the large number of animals dependent upon it.

It wasn't long before the hired men of Abraham and Lot began to quarrel over the resources. It got to the point of violence, and both Abraham and his Nephew knew that the time had come to separate.

Abraham was magnanimous to his Nephew, and gave Lot the choice as to where to settle. On one hand was a lavishly watered plain, which already had several cities thriving on it. On the other was the trackless arid wilderness which is now known as "The Judean Desert". I've been there, and it's rough country. Lot chose the watered plain, which seemed to be the better choice, leaving his older uncle to wander in the wilderness.

But...was it really the better choice? The two main cities in this abundant, watered plain were Sodom and Gomorrah. Scripture tells us that these cities were already corrupt when Lot chose to live there.

More than once, Abraham will be called upon to rescue his nephew from his bad decisions.
