Catholics, habemus papam! White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel early in the evening, and now Catholics have their pope: Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago, the first American pope, though he's also a Peruvian citizen. He takes the name Pope Leo XIV.
The decision took around 24 hours and saw Prevost's election on the fourth vote.
Some background on Pope Leo XIV:
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Prevost entered the novitiate of the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA) in 1977 and made his solemn vows in 1981 ...
His career in the Church has been marked by significant roles and achievements. After his ordination as a priest in 1982, Prevost joined the Augustinian mission in Peru in 1985 and served as chancellor of the Territorial Prélature of Chulucanas from 1985 to 1986.
He spent the year 1987 to 1988 in the United States as pastor for vocations and director of missions for the Augustinian Province of Chicago before returning to Peru where he spent the next ten years heading the Augustinian seminary in Trujillo and teaching canon law in the diocesan seminary ...
In 1999, he returned to Chicago and was elected provincial prior of the "Mother of Good Counsel" province in the archdiocese. Two and a half years later he was elected prior general of the Augustinian and served two terms until 2013.
Concerns immediately arose in conservative circles because of this prior X post from Prevost:
And this:
😬 People have thoughts, though no one is really sure what to expect.
There is some good news for conservatives:
But the libs are also celebrating...
Meanwhile, Protestants are reacting by posting Bible verses. 😉

Congrats to Cardinal Prevost. Who has the very real chance to be the first elected official from Illinois not to end his term in office by beginning a jail term.
He needs to stick to being the Head of the Catholic Church, not a freaking politician.
I wouldn't put the odds too high on that... is there any room left in the wing of the prison in Illinois they devote to ex-politicians? ;-)
The Franks are taking over the Roman Catholic Church!
Looks like a pedo to me.
He was educated in the same school as JPII, in Canon Law. While Francis assigned him to many positions, I don’t think it necessarily means he will be Francis imitation.
His last tweet was the JD Vance is wrong. The guy is about as Catholic as the Last Pope.
The term “Huguenot massacre” typically refers to the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre in 1572, where French Huguenots were killed by Catholics in Paris and other cities. However, there was also a significant event involving Huguenots and the Spanish in 1565 in Florida. General Pedro Menendez de Aviles led a Spanish attack on Fort Caroline, a French Huguenot settlement, capturing it and killing most of the men. The remaining Frenchmen, including Jean Ribault and other survivors, were later captured and executed by the Spanish near what is now Fort Matanzas, Florida. This event is often referred to as the “Massacre of the French” or the “Massacre of the Huguenots by the Spanish in Florida”.
American born but lived in other countries most of his life so the America connection is a flimsy one.
He’s also open to the Latin Mass.
I dare be hopeful.
2012 might as well be a century ago. I think John Roberts was conservative at one time...
He grew up in Chicago & his father was a vet. He is a registered Republican, though not an active voter when not in country. Did vote in 2024.
He is strong pro-life & openly anti-LGBTQ lifestyle. He is a refugee advocate & being an active Peruvian minister likely too liberal for me, but also likely too conservative for liberals.
He’s 69. Could be around for quite a while.
You are a sicko....probably a BAPTIST.
Is all that TRUE?
In all seriousness, I wouldn't be surprised if his selection is in part to attract Americans into Catholicism. The U.S. is the 3rd largest population.
It is a start...
