Black smoke rose from a Sistine Chapel chimney Thursday morning, indicating that the second ballot of the papal conclave that began on Wednesday has not produced a new pope.
The smoke appeared at around 11:50 a.m. local time at the Vatican in Rome, according to Vatican News, which notes that the cardinals broke for lunch and resumed around 2 p.m. Around 15,000 people were gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the announcement.
The smoke first emanated from the chimney starting at around 9 p.m. local time on Wednesday night after the first ballot. Around 45,000 people gathered for the first announcement.
"Our role here is to pray and to join with other Christians, other Catholics, to pray for the Holy Spirit to guide the whole process,” Deacon Nicholas Nkoronko from Tanzania told the official news portal of the Holy See.
The conclave is assembled to elect a new leader of the Roman Catholic Church following the death of Pope Francis at age 88 last month.
Over 133 cardinals from 70 countries entered the Sistine Chapel to be part of the conclave and swore secrecy about the deliberations.
Once a new pope is elected, white smoke will emanate from the chimney. Conclaves in the past have taken days, months or even years; the longest papal conclave lasted nearly three years from 1268 to 1271 following the death of Pope Clement IV.
The two most recent conclaves took multiple ballots for a pope to receive votes from two-thirds of the cardinals present, which is necessary to secure the position.
"Conclave" is Latin for "a room that can be locked," as the cardinals are "locked away in the Sistine Chapel" until a candidate for the papacy receives the support of two-thirds of the cardinals present.
A few cardinals are thought of as strong contenders to become the next pontiff. They include Cardinal Luis Tagle, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Cardinal Robert Sarah and Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
This is a developing story.

RE: A few cardinals are thought of as strong contenders to become the next pontiff. They include Cardinal Luis Tagle, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Cardinal Robert Sarah and Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
Remember this old saying: “When you enter the Conclave a Pope, you leave as a Cardinal”.
They better decide soon or Boasberg will appoint the next pontiff.
The schedule for Day 2 (May 8) and the following days looks something like this, according to Vatican News:
1:45 a.m. ET (7:45 a.m. Vatican time): The cardinals head to the Apostolic Palace (the pope’s official residence) from Santa Marta (where the cardinals stay during the conclave).
2:15 a.m. ET (8:15 a.m. Vatican time): The day begins with Mass in the Pauline Chapel.
3:15 a.m. ET (9:15 a.m. Vatican time): Midmorning prayer in the Sistine Chapel.
4:30 a.m. ET- 6:30 a.m. ET (10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Vatican time): Two votes are allowed in the morning. The expected time for smoke if a pope were to be elected would be around 10:30 a.m. local time and again after noon, according to Vatican News.
6:30 a.m. ET (12:30 p.m. Vatican time): Cardinals return to Santa Marta for lunch.
9:45 a.m. ET (3:45 p.m. Vatican time): The cardinals return to the Apostolic Palace.
10:30 a.m. ET (4:30 p.m. Vatican time): Voting resumes in the Sistine Chapel
11:30 a.m. ET to 1:00 p.m. ET (5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Vatican time): If white smoke appears, it is expected after 5:30 p.m. local time. Otherwise, we can expect the day to wrap up with white or black smoke around 7:00 p.m. local time.
1:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. Vatican time): Voting is concluded and the electors return to Santa Marta.
Bossy will rule that black smoke is no longer allowed as a signal.
Boasberg will appoint HIMSELF as the next pontiff.
I wish Sarah were a strong contender (despite his age), but I don’t think he really is. Of the contenders, I like Erdo, though I may be corrected.
They used to give them bread and water if they dithered too long.
White smoke!
RE: White smoke!
Where?
White smoke just seen. New Pope has not been announced yet, but whoever he is will come out soon from the balcony to say a prayer.
My bet is Parolin by a nose.
[EXCERPT]
Ever since Pope Francis died on April 21, Cardinal Pietro Parolin has been bettors’ favorite as his successor. But, not surprisingly, what gamblers think and what 133 cardinals decide can be completely different.
Parolin’s probability of becoming the next pope based on online bets has risen as high as 40% in recent days, but the most probable cardinal wasn’t the one selected a dozen years ago.
“Outsiders shouldn’t be discounted in the next pope betting market,” Sam Eaton, U.K. manager for Oddschecker, wrote Tuesday in an email. “Back in 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was 50/1 (2% probability) just two days before being elected.”
The Sistine Chapel is so dinky, I’d vote for anybody just to get out of there. I don’t see how 133 Cardinals could fit in there comfortably.
Sounds like the 2020 election. Black smoke, then someone found a few more ballots and suddenly white smoke.
Maybe they will go with the Black guy, in the name of DEI.
The Vatican uses Dominion voting machines?
A Chicago Pope elected, so the he won the vote of the 133 Cardinals by over 200 votes.
Now the real question of ideology: Cubs or White Sox?
