I finally trashed the book I was reading, as it was going nowhere. The book, which was awarded myriads of accolades, started out interesting but soon degenerated into drug-induced ramblings. An ensemble of unlikable characters who sat around pontificating and doing nothing reminded me of a dystopian version of Seinfeld, without any of the humor or familiar situations. Into the bag it went. I guess I must be a total Philistine for not recognizing the "greatness" of this novel.

There was one thing I did recognize, though. At one point, the Protagonist in the novel speaks of being in "The Slough of Despond". I knew EXACTLY where that come from. It was from one of the first novels ever written, "The Pilgrim's Progress (1678).

This is a book that the New York Times will probably never give an award to, but has stood the Test of Time for nearly 350 years.

Prophets aren't fun if they predict "bad news". Nobody wants to hear a prophet of doom and gloom. That's why False Prophets are so popular. This isn't a new thing. If we look at the Old Testament, we see that the True Prophets always presented a scenario: Doom is predicted, unless the people change their wicked ways. God's Prophets gave that option. It wasn't all rosy, but it also wasn't all doom.

Somebody once told me how to to discern between "Guilt" and "Conviction".

"Guilt" doesn't offer a solution. There is no way out. There is no Repentance, Reformation, or Restoration. It's DOOM, and not from The Holy Spirit.

"Conviction", on the other hand, offers a path forward, True repentance and Forgiveness, and Restoration to Fellowship with God.

It's time for us Pilgrims to Progress Forward, and OUT of the Slough of Despond.
