Dear Father in Heaven,
Blessed Are You, Oh LORD,

The word "anoint" is somewhat old-fashioned, but it has a world of meaning. The basic definition is to "pour oil on something". But that isn't a sufficient definition. For example, you don't "anoint" a salad when you pour olive oil on it.

In Religious use, to "anoint" someone is to pour the oil on in a ritualistic manner, accompanied by prayers or a commission. Priests, Deacons, Pastors, Preachers, Ministers, and Missionaries are usually anointed with oil as a beginning to their Ministries. This goes all the way back to the Book of Exodus, when Moses anointed the Levites to act as Priests.

Then there is the Anointing of The Sick, which is an ancient practice in most branches of Christianity, derived from the Epistle of James. This is accompanied by the "Laying on of Hands", and prayers for healing.

In this Letter from John, "The Anointing" is a direct reference to the Work of The Holy Spirit.

The passage is Revolutionary. It states that God The Holy Spirit resides WITHIN you, to teach, inspire, correct, support, and defend you. The Passage doesn't say that the adversary will be "eliminated". In fact, it warns that many will try to seduce you to lead you astray. The indwelling Holy Spirit is the Anointing that prepares you and protects you. It also comes with a Mission: To share the Word.
