Our Father Who Art in Heaven,
Hallowed Be Your Name!

All homes need a good interior paint job from time to time. I'm not a smoker, so my walls stayed fairly bright and clean for a longer time than some, but it still was showing signs of age. I compensated for this by putting stuff on the walls. In my office (the smaller of the two bedrooms), I hang paintings and collages that I create. My dogs provide me with plenty of subject matter, and I would rather apply paint to a canvas than to a wall.

The Kitchen has lots of spice racks and open shelving, with all kinds of bottles, jars and baskets of beans, pasta, and herbs. The Bathroom is similar, but with ceramic tropical fish swimming around on the walls and more paintings. The Master Bedroom has Quilts and Tapestries. The boring, long hallway between the living room and the bedrooms is really "different". The walls are fairly encrusted with Crosses from all over the World: Celtic Crosses, Orthodox Three-Bar Crosses, Jerusalem Crosses, Olive-Wood Crosses from Bethlehem, Italian Medieval Crosses, Jeweled Pectoral Crosses from Priestly Garments, Central American Folk Crosses, and Even a "Vampire Repellent Cross" complete with a handle, from the Carpathian Forest in Romania (From Lil(RIP). I have a Morrano Glass Cross from Venice, (Thank you Janet!), and an authentic Celtic Cross from Ireland (from Mom). My brother, when seeing these crosses, asked me if I had a "vampire problem". My response to that was classic Pink Panther, done in Inspector Clouseau's voice:

"Not Anymore!"

By encrusting the walls with "stuff", I was avoiding the inevitable Paint Job. Something had to give...

As the beautiful fresh air and Springtime Sunlight burst through my windows, I happened to look up and see that around the entire house, there was a two-foot film of black smoke on the walls, just below the ceiling line. I walked around from room to room and suddenly realized what had been causing my sinus issues all winter. My furnace, which was doing a good job of heating, was also belching soot into my house. The entire interior needs to be repainted.

First of all, I had to have the furnace fixed. A quick call to my Oil Company, and the technician came. Sure enough, there had to be parts replaced, both indoors and outside at the tank. And now...time to paint. This involves cleaning the soot, removing all my tchotchkes, spackling, sanding, and, finally, painting. I'm almost done with the bathroom, with five rooms (and the hallway of crosses) to go.

It took something really serious to get me to do this project, which may take all summer. What I've done so far looks so fresh, renewed, and clean. Instead of just "covering up", I am getting down to the bare walls and renewing my whole house.

It took a smoky furnace to shake me up out of my lethargy.

(And, no, Insurance won't pay for it. I already checked.)

When The Holy Spirit comes into our lives, He shakes things up. We can't hide anything from Him, either with human arts (the Paintings), Warm Feelings (the Quilts), religious rituals and symbols (the Walls of Crosses), or even a fresh coat of paint without cleaning up what's underneath.

Looks like I'm going to have a BIG Yard sale.

Prayer of Thanks for Spiritual Cleansing

Father God, how I praise You that the Lord Jesus is not only my Saviour Who died on the cross to redeem me from eternal separation from You, and rose again the third day, to share His life with me, but that He is also my heavenly Advocate, Who is my representative before Your throne of grace and Who by Your mercy is defending me against the accuser of my soul.

Thank You, that He not only identified with my sin and paid the redemption price, but that He also covered me with His robe of righteousness and caused me to be made blameless in Your holy eyes, by grace through faith. I am not worthy to gather the crumbs under Your table, but You are the ever-living Lord of mercy and grace, Who has reached down to adopt me as Your child.

I can do nothing but praise Your holy name and offer You my heart and life to be a living sacrifice, separated and holy unto the Lord. May You be glorified in my life, and may I never cease from praising You in spirit and in truth all the days of my life.

I pray that I may grow in grace and in an ever deeper knowledge of my Lord and Saviour, Whom to know is life eternal and in Whose name I pray, amen.
