Catholics set to exceed Anglicans in Britain for first time since Reformation due to younger churchgoers

A “quiet revival” in UK Catholicism appears to be occurring, especially among those age groups referred to as Generation Z and younger Millennials, reports The Times of London, while noting that Catholics are rapidly catching up with Anglican numbers across all age groups.

Catholicism could soon overtake Anglicanism to become the country’s largest denomination of worshippers for the first time since the English Reformation initiated by King Henry VIII in 1527. Anglicans could even slip into third behind Pentecostals among churchgoers aged under 35 years of age.

... the new report by the Bible Society suggests that the proportion of people in Britain attending church actually grew by more than half between 2018 and 2024.

12% of respondents, 5.8 million people, said they attend church at least once a month in 2024, up from 8%, or 3.7 million people, in 2018, with the largest increase among those under 25 years old.

...According to YouGov surveys, which looked at more than 13,000 people in 2024 and 19,000 people in 2018, the growth in attendance has mainly been seen in Catholic and Pentecostal churches. The increase among younger people has been found especially with young men.

in 2018 Anglicans made up 30% of regular churchgoers aged between 18 and 34 while Catholics made up 22% and Pentecostals 10%. By 2024, Anglicans made up just 20% of this group while Catholics made up 41%. Pentecostals are now not far behind Anglicans at 18%.

...In 2018 the survey found that across all ages, 41% of those who attend church at least once a month were Anglican, 23% Catholic and 4% Pentecostal. By 2024, the Anglican share had fallen to 34%, the Catholic is 31%, while the Pentecostal is 10%

Anglicans have been overtaken and are now outnumbered by Catholics by more than two to one among Generation Z and younger millennial churchgoers in Britain, a report by the Bible Society has found.

In church pews across the UK, Catholics are rapidly catching Anglicans up across all age groups. Catholicism could soon overtake Anglicanism to become the country’s largest denomination of worshippers for the first time since the Reformation five centuries ago. Anglicans look set to slip into third place behind Pentecostals among churchgoers aged under 35.

Polling suggests that while the average Briton is more likely than ever to be a non-believer, those who do still identify as Christian appear to be “practising their religion more intentionally”, with an increase in the number who say they attend church at least once a month.

Unfortunately for them, this pope wants to send them more muslims. They might need to tune out the pope when it comes to immigration or they’ll be under islamic law.

The “Church” founded to allow someone to “marry” someone they can’t really marry for the sake of his “conscience” is arguably being true to her “principles”.

Who am I to judge?

That said, I am willing to bet that in 200 years, worldwide Anglicans will be outnumbered by Jews and possibly have Albigensian-like numbers. (Which calls for a joke about the O.P.’s and the S.J.’s.)

Why doesn’t Archbishop of Caterbury Welby do something to change this?

Oh, wait, he is not archbishop anymore. Wasn’t he caught concealing sex crimes or something? I don’t suppose churchmen being immoral and evil has anything to do with the falling away of membership?

Bring back the Roundheads and let’s see what happens to the UK, religion-wise.

That’s cause a large chunk of Mohammedans name their sons, well, Mohammed.

but Christians choose a wider range of names.

Here are the top 10 Boy’s names in England and Wales for 2023 based on birth registration data from teh Office for national Statistics (ONS). The ONS reported 304,162 male births in 2023, and here are Top 10 Boys’ Names in 2023 with Percentages:

Muhammad: 4,661 babies, ~1.53%
Noah: 4,382 babies, ~1.44%
Oliver: 3,676 babies, ~1.21%
George: 3,494 babies, ~1.15%
Arthur: 3,184 babies, ~1.05%
Leo: 2,960 babies, ~0.97%
Luca: 2,879 babies, ~0.95%
Freddie: 2,568 babies, ~0.84%
Jack: 2,511 babies, ~0.83%
Henry: 2,488 babies, ~0.82%

Perhaps …

However, I bet the Muslims live out their faith intently more than those with #2 - #10 baby names.

God Save The King ???

Yeah … not so much … if God is left out of the “Christian Kingdom.”

Lizzy tried … but The World defeated her .

We can do the same. LVMH is a large French luxury brand corporation. We can fine them over one billion dollars over a phantom law.

The Europeans were used to dealing with Biden.

We don’t need to wait for government to fix this.

We can just refuse to buy EU goods and services.

If Americans were to do that en masse, guess who’d blink first.

And I say that as someone who uses/consumes products from Europe daily.

I’ve already found workarounds for most.

If I can’t find alternatives for the rest, I’ll live without.

“, I bet the Muslims live out their faith intently more than those with #2 - #10 baby names.”

well, many of those with “Christian” names won’t be raised Christian in the first place.

Among Muslims - I would suggest looking up the various “Ex Muslims” associations - they are vocal on twitter and youtube - the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain (CEMB), supports 350 ex-Muslims yearly, mostly facing family ostracism or threats. This is likely a fraction of total apostates, as many conceal their disbelief

A 2017 Pew Research study on U.S. Muslims found 24% of those raised Muslim no longer identify as such (55% unaffiliated, 25% Christian). UK trends may be similar, but cultural pressures (e.g., community cohesion) likely lower this to 10–15% per generation.

Conversion to Christianity exists but is rare—e.g., Christian Concern (2024) notes their Safe Haven project aids converts, but numbers are low (hundreds yearly).
