Back in 2004, I had a political bumper sticker on my car. A very wealthy client in West Palm Beach saw the bumper sticker, and fired me on the spot. It was a huge loss to me, as I had been teaching three children at the house, and was getting $90.00 a week from this particular client. At the time I was aggrieved by this, as I am an American Citizen, and have to Right to Vote for anyone I want. It wasn't even an outlier on the bumper sticker, but one of the two legitimate candidates. The client was wrong to fire me, but I suppose that was HER Right as a Citizen to do so. That's the chance one takes when one is self-employed. One's earnings depend 100% upon the goodwill of the client. It's a Free Country, after all.

Twenty-One Years have passed since that incident, and I'm still self-employed, and have wonderful clients. Some of them agree with me politically and some don't, but I no longer have "political" bumper stickers on my car. I do, however, have stickers from all the local rock bands who are my family and friends.

Way back in the 1980's I had this one:

"I ❤️ THE UNBORN"

That one got my Ford Country Squire keyed, and a hate letter placed under my windshield wiper.

I was more puzzled than angry about this. The car was old (1970's) and had enough scratches and dents that the keying didn't make much difference, but I couldn't get over that hate letter. The message on my bumper sticker wasn't particularly negative or political, it just expressed love. That time, I let the sticker stay.

Aside from those two incidents, I think I can safely say that I've never been persecuted either for my Faith or for my Politics. I am very blessed to have been born in the United States, and I am forever grateful.

I am free to express myself, and others are free to accept or reject what I have to say. It's not like that in a lot of other places. Intense persecution continues around the world, even in this day and age.

When I was a kid, I learned of how the Communist Countries persecuted Religious People. This seemed incomprehensible to me. Christians and Jews are hard-working, productive, law-abiding citizens. Even the Bible instructs us to pay taxes when they are due, obey the Law, and pray for our Leaders. I would think that a Totalitarian Regime would be delighted to have such compliant, productive, and contented citizens! Even Karl Marx, in calling religion "the opiate of the people" had a little grain of truth embedded in his polemic. His complaint that religious people don't revolt against the establishment can be seen more than one way. If the Establishment is Communist, a little "opiate" can keep counter-revolution in check.

But, of course, Communism isn't "logical". The STATE is "god" and will tolerate no other. It doesn't matter that the religious people are good citizens. They, by their Faith, have become Enemies Of the State.

The paradoxical effect is that persecution doesn't stamp out faith; it makes it stronger.

Getting my car keyed didn't make me "Pro-Choice". It only strengthened my resolve to be "Pro-Life". That's just how it works.

The atheist philosopher Frederick Nietzsche said: "That which doesn't kill me makes me stronger." He has a point, but I like what St. Paul said even better:

35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.(Romans 8 KJV)
