Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Holy Name!
How Wonderful,
How Perfect,
and How Hallowed!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise and Worship,
For You Alone Are The Most High God,
The One True God Of Abraham!

"I don't know, George," I muttered. "I hate housework. I don't know if I could clean somebody else's house. I have a hard enough time cleaning my own."

George replied, "C'mon, ML, this is SO easy. Mrs. Kobescue. is from Romania and she's a clean-freak! I think she totally cleans the house before I even get there. And she pays well, IN CASH. I have too many clients right now and I'd be glad to give this one to you."

Well, that didn't sound like hard work to me, so I went to the Luxury Condo in the heart of the wealthiest section of Boston. Mrs. Kobescue greeted me warmly and handed me a basket of cleaning supplies. Then she proceeded to follow me around the spacious, beautiful apartment, with huge panoramic windows over the Charles River. I started to clean.

"No, no, no," Mrs. Kobescue."You don't use Mr. Clean on the tiles! You must use AJAX on the tiles!"

I got out the AJAX from the basket, and cleaned the tiles around the tub (which were already sparkling clean). Then I proceeded to use the same rag to wash the outside of the toilet.

"No, no, no," Mrs. Kobescue."You don't use AJAX on the toilet! You must use Mr. Clean on the toilet."

I discarded the rag and grabbed a new one, and got Mr. Clean out of the basket, and began to clean the toilet. Outside first, and then, inside.

"No, no, no," Mrs. Kobescue."You don't use Mr. Clean on the inside of the toilet! You must use Tidy Bowl on the inside!"

I knew enough not to use Tidy Bowl on the doorknob, so I grabbed the Formula 409.

"No, no, no," Mrs. Kobescue."You don't use Formula 409 on the doorknob! You must use Barcolene on the doorknob!"

This went on for over two hours. I assumed that, once I knew the routine, and what product to use where, it would be smooth sailing. But, the following Saturday, it was the same. Finally, I asked my sister to come along to help me, because I was going crazy. We could be a Tag Team!

When we showed up together, Mrs. Kobescue said:

"Good! Good!
Is Two of you!
Today Ve do Silvervare and Veendows!"

My career as a cleaning lady ended badly.

My Sister and I were reminiscing about Mrs. Kobescue (not her real name) and I recalled one of the stories Mrs. Kobescue had related as she followed me around the condo. This is the Story I promised in Yesterday's Thread:

Growing up in Ceaușescu's Romania was very difficult. Far from being a "Workers' Paradise", Romania was rumored to be the worst, most oppressive, and dangerous of all the Soviet Bloc Countries. Although they were hard-working and educated people, Mr. and Mrs. Kobescue were very poor, and often found themselves hungry. A kindly Doctor in the little town gave the Kobescues a pig, to raise, and then slaughter for food.

Oh, how Mrs. K loved that pig! She had Mr. K. build her a lovely little pen in the yard, with a hard whitewashed floor and fence. She bathed the pig every day, and made sure that the pig's pen was spotless. Soon the pig began to refuse to eat, became listless and sickly. Mrs. K. was afraid the pig had gotten a virus, so she took the pig out of the pen, washed everything with disinfectant, gave the pig a bath, and did everything she could to combat this strange infection. The traveling Vet wasn't due in the Village for at least another month, and when he did show up, Mrs. K. was afraid she wouldn't have the money to pay him. Finally, she went to the kind Doctor who had given her the pig in the first place.

The Doctor came to the house (a house-call for a pig!) and examined the pig and her environment. He gave a very stern answer to Mrs. K.:

"You're KILLING this pig with cleanliness! Tear up that cement floor and let her roll in the mud! She's pining away, because YOU won't let her be a PIG!"

Not to picking on any one group, but I've noticed that a lot of religious organizations are like Mrs. K. Nothing you can do is good enough. The struggle to stay "clean" involves a vast human effort, with hundreds of rules governing this and that. We think if we can use the right formula, like the Mr. Clean, AJAX, Barcolene, and Tidy Bowl, that we can, through our own work, become "clean" before the LORD OF THE UNIVERSE.

Today's Scripture tells us that it doesn't work that way. We become clean by the regenerating grace and power of The Holy Spirit.

And now you know the story of the Doctor, the Communist Country, and the Pig. Did you ever think it would be possible to relate such a Story to The Gospel? And, what about the coincidence of my Sister reminding me of Mrs. K. the day before this particular Scripture came up? What a Coinkidink! 🤔

I grew up playing in the dirt, with dogs and cats, and horses nearby, as well as their dung. That made me less allergic, less prone to sickness, than others who came from sparkling clean homes.
